Vocational guidance

Guide

Vocational guidance serves as a guide.

The term that concerns us now we have to make clear that it is made up of two words that have their etymological origin in Latin. The first of them, orientation , comes from the verb oriri which can be translated as "to be born." The second, vocational , for its part emanates from another Latin verb: vocare , which is synonymous with calling.

Vocational guidance is a set of practices aimed at clarifying vocational problems . This is preventive work whose objective is to provide the necessary elements to enable the best choice situation for each subject.

What does vocational guidance consist of?

Vocational guidance can be carried out individually or in groups, since it involves activities linked to both personal exploration and the analysis of reality through information about the academic offerings and the particularities of the labor market.

Generally, the recipients of vocational guidance are adolescents who are close to completing their secondary studies. In any case, it can also be aimed at university students, young people in general and even adults in the workforce, who are evaluating the completion of postgraduate training.

Advice

A test can contribute to vocational guidance.

The importance of a test

The most common thing is that to help young people, above all, to find that vocation and that professional path, counselors or pedagogues use a series of tools such as the well-known vocational guidance tests. These are questionnaires that are made up of a broad list of attitudes that are vital in various professions and they must choose, using four parameters (not at all, a little, quite a bit or a lot) the interest they have in the aforementioned.

So, for example, one of the attitudes that can be included in these tests is which biography you are most interested in reading. A question that, using the aforementioned parameters, must be answered through the options offered: that of a doctor, that of a businessman, that of an architect or that of a defender of nature.

However, in addition to this test that helps to know the individual's own abilities, other instruments are also usually used to carry out the aforementioned educational orientation. Thus, use is made of all types of information about existing educational options, how the labor market is, the university courses with the most professional opportunities...

Vocational guidance as an individual and guided task

It should be noted that the vocational search is a personal task where each individual must recognize themselves as the protagonist, but having the necessary resources to promote and enrich that search.

In this sense, we must keep in mind that the vocation is not something innate , but rather it develops at the level of action, knowledge and coexistence. By acquiring various experiences consciously and unconsciously, the subject becomes convinced that he can choose for himself.

Professionals who assist in vocational guidance must discover the uniqueness of each person and accompany their decision, without forgetting that the task implies a responsibility for both parties. Research on personal history, tastes, preferences and aptitudes are key to the process.
