Darkness

The night begins with sunset and lasts until dawn.

Night is the time when the clarity of the day is missing . It is the period from sunset (when the sun crosses the plane of the horizon and moves into a non-visible hemisphere) to sunrise (when the sun crosses the plane of the horizon and moves into the visible hemisphere) of the following day.

This term in question has its etymological origin in Latin. Specifically, we find that it comes from the word nox , which precisely means "night."

The length of the night (and day) varies throughout the year. The shortest night occurs with the summer solstice (when the sun reaches its maximum southern or boreal position), while the shortest occurs with the winter solstice .

In popular culture, night is often the chosen setting for scary and horror stories. This is based on the association made between darkness and danger, since the lack of light would be favorable ground for murderers and monsters to hide.

On the other hand, some of the most popular fantasy creatures, such as vampires and werewolves , live at night and avoid sunlight.

In the case of the aforementioned lycanthropes, it is established that when they act it is on full moon nights because it is when the aforementioned natural satellite gives them the strength and energy necessary to put aside their human appearance and become animals willing to find someone. their victims, whom they will bite and kill.

There are many films that throughout history have revolved around these and other monsters and that have taken as their title one where the word night takes center stage. Thus, for example, we find the film “Fright Night” , from 2011 , which tells us how a young man discovers that his neighbor is a vampire whose victims are those who live in the neighborhood.

For Christianity , continuing with the negative connotation, the night is linked to the end of the world . It is usually associated, in this sense, with the moral state of man when he is under the influence of the devil.

The cat and the moon

Many horror stories are set at night.

The term in colloquial expressions

In addition to the above, we cannot ignore the fact that there are many colloquial expressions that use the term night. In this sense, we could highlight the adverbial phrase dog night , which attempts to express that someone had a very bad night on the night in question or that the weather was cold, rainy and stormy.

And all of this without forgetting what is known as the wedding night , which is what takes place on the day of two people's marriage and is supposed to be very romantic for them.

The night and the fun

Nowadays, the night is also related to fun and entertainment for adults .

Nightclubs and dance venues, for example, open at night and close at dawn. For this reason, the night is usually associated with an unhealthy life: “Miguel likes the night.”
