Definition of

netbook

Computing

A netbook is a type of laptop computer.

A netbook is a type of portable computer . It differs from traditional notebooks or laptops due to its small dimensions, limited functionality and low cost.

The term was coined by the British company Psion to name a line of laptops launched in 1999 . Almost a decade later, the concept gained popularity again to refer to all small and cheap laptops.

Development of netbooks

Netbooks were originally designed for emerging markets due to their low price. The first models weighed less than a kilogram, featured 7-inch screens and had a keyboard 15% smaller in size than notebooks.

Over time, netbooks began to undergo greater development and most of these devices already have a 10.1-inch screen , webcam and 1.6 Ghz or higher processors .

Main features

Specifically, at this time we can establish that these are the main hallmarks of a netbook:

  • It has a maximum weight of two kilos.
  • Regarding its screen, we could determine that it has a size that does not exceed 14 inches.
  • It is also identified by having integrated circuits that have less power than those of larger laptop computers. All this without overlooking the fact that it also contains a smaller number of ports.
  • Likewise, it does not have an optical reading or recording unit.

Netbooks are often used for browsing the Internet.

Advantages of netbooks

In addition, we should also highlight various equally interesting advantages that a netbook has and which means that more and more people choose to purchase one in the market:

  • It is easy to transport, since not only does it not weigh much but it also takes up little space. It has small dimensions and that means it can be stored anywhere.
  • It is priced much lower than large laptops. Hence, it is easier to access it for people who have little finances.
  • No less important is to highlight the fact that a device like this consumes much less energy than another with similar characteristics and a larger size.
  • It becomes a great instrument to be able to work and consult the Internet at any time and wherever you are.

Its usefulness

The main function of a netbook is Internet browsing. The devices are prepared to access wirelessly ( WiFi ) from any point, although they can also be connected through a network cable. In this way, tourists or executives who have a netbook can check their email, chat or participate in video conferences with comfort.

The use of an office suite (with word processors and spreadsheets) is also possible with a notebook. However, activities such as video editing or games that require high graphical performance cannot be carried out on these mini-notebooks. Another point against it is the poor autonomy of its battery .
