Mogotes

A mogote is an isolated cone-shaped mound.

Mogote is a pre-Roman voice that could come from the Basque word mokoti (translatable as “pointed” ), in turn derived from moko (that is, “point” ). An elevation that resembles a mountain is called mogote.

Rock mound or accumulation

The concept can be used to refer to a mound that is isolated and has the appearance of a cone . It also refers to an accumulation of stones .

Mogotes, therefore, are usually isolated prominences. These elevations are common in the Caribbean islands , arising in areas that register tropical rains such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic .

In general, the mogotes have a height of less than 25 meters , with a very varied diameter. They are elongated, like towers or, as we said above, cones.

In the field of mountaineering and hiking , accumulations of stone that are used to mark trails are called mogotes. These mogotes guide hikers.

The Mogote

El Mogote , on the other hand, is a town located in the province of San Juan ( Argentine Republic ). It is part of the Chimbas department and has about 1,500 inhabitants.

Punta Mogotes

Also in Argentina is Punta Mogotes . This is the name given to a geographical feature that is located in the coastal area of the city of Mar del Plata , in the province of Buenos Aires .

Punta Mogotes is both the name of the geographical feature and of the spa complex and the neighborhood that develops there. The beaches here, enjoyed by thousands of people each summer season, are very popular.

This complex is located south of Mar del Plata, more precisely its port, and its bordering neighborhoods are Bosque Peralta Ramos, Faro Norte and Colinas Peralta Ramos. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Argentina (known by its acronym, INDEC ), the population of Punta Mogotes is made up of a part of the city of Mar del Plata, where we find towns such as Parque Palermo, Belgrano, Parque Hermoso, Camet Station, La Florida Park and Colina Alegre.

Thousands of tourists come to Punta Mogotes every year to enjoy its beaches, but also the wide variety of services that this spa complex offers to perfectly complement a stay in a coastal area. Summer vacations are usually the time of greatest relaxation and, although each person has their own tastes, tourism professionals manage to offer a series of options that are pleasant for most.

One of the main attractions of Punta Mogotes is its lighthouse, which is almost a century and a half old and where since 2014 the Space for the Memory and Promotion of Human Rights has taken place. We can also visit a set of protected lagoons that connect with the Puerto Mar del Plata Natural Reserve , where they carry out conservation work aimed at fauna, botany and also education.

Punta Mogotes Beach

Punta Mogotes is a well-known Argentine tourist destination, close to Mar del Plata.

History of Punta Mogotes

Since its origins, its beaches stood out for the lagoons, grasslands and dunes that surrounded them. In the mid-20th century, the area became especially attractive to those looking for a quiet alternative to the central part of Mar del Plata. In 1979, work began that would lead to the Punta Mogotes Complex , which had twenty-four spas and was inaugurated two years later.

This project was very favorable for urban development and for businessmen in the service area, although it negatively affected the natural beauty that the area had until then. When a beach becomes commercial, part of its landscape is always lost, because the necessary stalls are built on it to sell food and rent tents, among other services.
