Latin is where we can establish that the etymological origin of the term mode that concerns us now is found. Specifically, it emanates from the word "modus", which can be translated as "measure" or "manner."
Precisely starting from this we have to establish the existence of two expressions with that Latin word that are still used with some frequency:
-"Modus operandi", can be translated as "way of acting" and is used to refer to the way in which one or more people act or proceed. An example could be the following operation: "The modus operandi of that political party is tension and deception."
-"Modus vivirdi", on the other hand, means "way of life." In its case, it is used to mention the way a person is or the way they earn their living. An example with her would be: "The modus vivendi of this tribe is agriculture and hunting."
That Latin word came to Spanish as a mode , a term with more than a dozen meanings in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). The first refers to the appearance or position that a being or an act exhibits before the eyes of an individual.
The manner is also the necessary procedure to carry out an action and sobriety or balance when speaking or acting. For example: "When he told me his decision, he said it in a way that was shocking to me," "Give up, you have no way of escaping," "He is a well-mannered, very polite boy."
Starting from these different meanings that the term mode has, we cannot ignore that among the words that can function as synonyms for it are manner, method, procedure, form, means, disposition , bearing, style, conduct, tenor, guise...
In the field of grammar , the manner is a category expressed in a verb through inflection , which refers to the individual's attitude towards what is expressed or to the syntactic dependence that exists in certain types of subordination.
The grammatical mood , therefore, is an intervening feature in the conjugation of verbs . These modes have different characteristics according to the language. In Spanish we can find modes such as the indicative mood , the subjunctive mood , the imperative mood and the conditional mood , to mention some possibilities.
At the legal level, the mode is a burden tied to an inheritance, a donation or other rights . In this way, the subject is obliged to provide a benefit in exchange for the attribution.
For music , mode is a form of organization of the intervals of a scale or the structure of a rhythmic relationship. Philosophy (in relation to a certain although variable form of a being) and physics (in relation to the characteristics that a phenomenon can assume) also appeal to the idea of mode.
Furthermore, we cannot forget that the expression "Zen mode" has become popular. This is intended to express that a person is in a very relaxed moment in their life, in which they do not want conflicts. An example would be: "Eva is in Zen mode after her romantic breakup and job change."
