Measure

With a ruler you can measure the distance between two points.

The first step we are going to take when analyzing in depth the term measure that concerns us now is to proceed to determine its etymological origin. In this sense, we have to emphasize that it emanates from Latin and more precisely from the verb metiri , which can be translated as "measure."

Measurement is the action and effect of measuring (comparing a quantity with its unit or something non-material with something else; moderating actions or words). It may, therefore, be the result of a measurement . For example: “The table measures eighty centimeters long by fifty centimeters wide” , “I love this piece of furniture but, based on its measurements, I don't think it will fit in my kitchen” , “Please take the measurement of that table to see how much we have to cut.”

Measurement of size, distance and other variables

In this sense, we can measure, for example, the size of an object or the distance between two points. This will mean that we will have to use the units of measurement that are standardized. Among the most significant, according to the International System of Units (SIU), would be the kilometer, the meter, the centimeter, the millimeter...

However, there are other units to determine time, mass, temperature or light intensity.

The concept in mathematics and literature

In this area of mathematics and science in general we would have to add the existence of what is known as Measurement Theory. It is a study or analysis that revolves around what functions, statistics or probability are.

But the term measurement is also used within the scope of Literature. In this case, it refers to the action that is carried out with the clear objective of determining the number of syllables that the verse of a poem has.

Precisely in this area of literature we would have to highlight the existence of a very significant work that was carried out by the great British writer William Shakespeare. We are referring to “Measure for measure”. It is a comedy that addresses issues such as power, strong moral norms or sexuality.

Centimeter

Taking measurements when making clothes is essential.

Measurement as disposition and correspondence

A measure can also be a provision , a regulation or a decision : “The government's measure has upset business owners,” “The mayor plans to decree a measure to regulate the work of street vendors,” “The boss informed me of the measure.: I don't share it, but I must abide by it."

The correspondence of something with another thing is another meaning of the concept: “We are going to lower the medication as the infection recedes” , “As the training sessions go on, the team will present better performance” , “The work is paid as that we receive the shipments.”

Intensity or moderation

Measurement can be, on the other hand, the degree or intensity of something : “I don't understand to what extent this harms us,” “We would have to analyze what the director's measure is to make a similar decision.”

Sanity , moderation or prudence in behavior or expression is also known as measure: “The victim was very nervous, but he showed restraint in his public statements and assured that he would wait for the court's decision,” “The footballer “He spoke with measure, trying to avoid controversy.”
