A sea is an area of salt water.
The notion of sea has its origin in the Latin word mare and refers to the portion of salt water that can be seen in large areas of the earth's surface. Furthermore, a sea is usually defined as each of the fragments in which that mass of water can be considered to be segmented (as occurs, for example, when talking about the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea or others).
On the other hand, it must also be said that a sea is a lake of significant size . In these cases, the name closed or inland sea is usually used: An example of these lakes is the Dead Sea.
It should be noted that some poets and many people in general refer to the sea in the feminine ( la mar ). However, the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) considers that it is a masculine noun.
Sea classification
On a comparative level, it can be said that the sea constitutes a surface of salt water that has a smaller extension compared to the ocean . In any case, some specialists do not distinguish between sea and ocean.
Among the different classifications of seas, we find littoral or coastal seas (which are large and very open, as is the case with the Norwegian Sea), continental seas (which are within the continents and communicate with the oceans by a shallow strait. For example: the Mediterranean Sea) and inland or closed seas (the aforementioned large lakes, which occupy endorheic depressions).
In the sea you can practice water sports such as surfing and windsurfing, among many others.
The term as a name
It must also be emphasized that this term in question is part of the name of many cities and towns around the world. Populations that included that due to the fact that the sea that bathes or surrounds them has been fundamental and essential in their history. Among the most significant we find Roquetas de Mar which is in Almería ; Santillana del Mar which is located in Cantabria ; or Mar del Plata, which is one of the most important cities in Argentina .
Likewise, sea is a word that serves as the name of a large number of women throughout the planet. This name comes from Nuestra Señora del Mar, which famous people have, such as the actress Mar Regueras or the model and presenter Mar Flores .
Sea as abundance
Finally, it is interesting to note that the concept of sea is used to refer to the great abundance of certain things: "A sea of people populated the main street," "She shed a sea of tears after the death of a pet."
Starting from this last definition, it should be noted that a musical event was created a few years ago that took the concept of sea in that sense to name itself. Specifically, we are referring to the La Mar de Músicas Festival that is being held in the city of Cartagena , in Murcia .
At the end of July is when this contest takes place, taking place in different important enclaves of the city such as the Town Hall Square or the Arab Castle . They host concerts by artists such as Carlinhos Brown , Tony Allen and Juan Perro .
