Hillside

Side

The sides of mountains are called slopes.

In order to determine the etymological origin of the term hillside, we must go to Latin. And it is the result of the sum of two components of said language: “latus”, which can be translated as “side”, and the suffix “-era”.

Hillside is a term with various uses depending on the context . The concept, according to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) , refers to that or that belonging to or related to the side . Let us remember that side, for its part, can be one of the parts that limit a whole; the side of a body of a person or an animal; the faces of a coin or other object; and the lines that form a geometric figure.

The notion of slope is usually used to name the slope of a mountain, a hill or a height in general . It can be said, in this sense, that the slope is one of the sides of the mountain in question. For example: “The mountaineers chose to climb the west slope since the ascent on that side is easier,” “An avalanche on the north slope buried fourteen people,” “They say that the most beautiful view is obtained by climbing the south slope.” ” .

Hillside movements

Displacements of earth or rocks that are on a slope are known as slope movements or hillside phenomena . Since a slope implies a slope, these displacements occur in the direction of the slope due to the action of the force of gravity. Landslides and landslides are some of the most common slope movements.

There are various hillside phenomena that exist. However, taking as a criterion the movement they are going to make, we would have to say that the most significant are the ones we present below:

• Flow movements, which do not have a net surface of what would be displacement, among other things. Within this category we could include both solifluction and crawling.

• Landslides, which are vertical in nature.

• Landslides, which can be rotational or translational.

• Complex movements, which are those that combine several of the aforementioned slope phenomena.

Hillside movements can cause serious damage.

Preventive measures

In many corners of the globe it is common for this type of slope movements to take place. Hence, the authorities, with the help of geography and environmental professionals, take the necessary measures either to prevent these from occurring or to protect the population and the environment from serious damage.

There are various actions that can be carried out for this purpose, among them, the establishment of what would be meshes, anchors of various kinds and even the placement of so-called retaining walls. These, based on the phenomenon they plan to face, can be made with concrete, rock, earth... In order for them to work correctly, it is essential to take into account, when creating them, aspects such as the type of slide or stability.

Ladera as a partner or companion

In Argentina , the idea of ladero is linked to a person who supports or accompanies another.

“Gómez is the main supporter of the mayor in the southern zone of the party” y “Claudia is an unconditional supporter who has supported me in the most difficult moments of my life” muestran este uso del concepto.
