The kelvin is a unit of temperature used within a scale developed by the Irish physicist William Thomson (1824-1907), better known as Lord Kelvin .
From an etymological point of view, we have to establish that kelvin is a word that derives from Celtic and can be translated as "narrow river."
This scale measures the temperature value starting at absolute zero : the lowest temperature that can exist.
Equivalences between kelvin and degree Celsius
The symbol for this unit is K. Taking the base of the degree centigrade or Celsius , therefore, 0 K is equivalent to -273.15 ºC . This means that 0 K is absolute zero , the point at which atoms and molecules have the lowest possible thermal energy. There is no macroscopic system that can reach a temperature lower than this absolute zero, hence its name.
From this starting point, the increase of one kelvin also represents the increase of one degree centigrade or Celsius . In this way, 1 K is equal to -272.15 ºC ; 2 K is equivalent to -271.15 ºC and so on. On the other hand, it can be stated that 0 ºC is the same as 273.15 K.
Absolute temperature
The temperature measured in kelvin is known as absolute temperature . The scale is generally used in chemistry , physics and other scientific fields.
In the field of photography, film and video, kelvin is a reference for the so-called color temperature (which compares a color of the light spectrum with the tone of light that would be emitted by a black body that is heated to a certain temperature. ; a black body, in turn, is an ideal object that absorbs all the radiant energy and light that falls on it).
It is also important to know that the Kelvin temperature is used throughout the world except in some countries such as the United States, Liberia and Burma. And in these the so-called English system is chosen.
Name Kelvin
In the same way, we cannot ignore that Kelvin is also a male name. It is attributed to men of strong character, generous, communicative and very sensitive. They are also flirtatious, with a great capacity for effort, sincere and somewhat materialistic.
Among the famous names we find, for example, the American mixed martial arts fighter Kelvin Gastelum (1991) or the racing driver of South African origin Kelvin van der Linde (1996), whose important milestones in his career are having won the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 2017 or the GT Masters on two occasions: 2014 and 2019.
They are joined by former American football player Kelvin Benjamin (1991), who played for teams such as the Carolina Panthers or the Kansas City Chiefs, and former basketball player Kelvin T. Cato (1974). The latter played for ten seasons in the NBA playing for teams such as the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks.
