Journey

An itinerary describes a journey.

An itinerary is the course, orientation or description of a certain route, route or path , which includes the inclusion of appointments to places, breaks and accidents that may appear during the journey. Likewise, the route that is chosen in order to reach a certain destination or the list of data relating to a trip is known as an itinerary - a term originating from the Latin word itinerarĭus -.

For example: “Let me analyze the itinerary: I need to know how far our next stop is” , “The excursion itinerary will take us to four towns: Las Toninas, Mar de Ajó, Villa Gesell and Mar del Plata” , “We would have to organize a specific itinerary to make the most of our vacation time” , “Horacio designed the itinerary in a hurry and because of him we did not see the most important monuments in the region during our stay” .

Roman itinerary

It should be noted that this word began to be used in Ancient Rome to identify a road map. The Tabula Peutingeriana , for example, is an itinerary that shows a road network of the Roman Empire . One of its copies can be seen in the Austrian National Museum in Vienna .

Roman itineraries include lists of cities and mention the distances that exist on a road. The Antonine itinerary , written in the 3rd century , is another example of an itinerary.

In ancient times, itineraries also served as guides for tourists. In this sense, one cannot fail to remember the existence of itineraries that describe pilgrimages to the Holy Land .

Maritime and military itinerary

In addition to all of the above, we have to point out that, although it is not widely used, the term itinerary that we are now analyzing has another meaning. Specifically, it is used in the maritime field to define the course , the path, that the ships will follow at a given time.
