An island is a territory that is surrounded by water.
The word island describes an area of land that is surrounded by water on all sides. Islands can be located in seas , rivers , lakes or lagoons , having very diverse sizes and formats: from covering a few square meters to covering an area of more than two million square kilometers.
Unlike a continent , the island has a similar climate on the entire surface, which is located at exact heights in relation to sea level . It should be noted that there are some islands that are connected to the continent through the continental shelf . Therefore, they are actually considered part of the adjacent continent, such as Great Britain , Cuba and the Falkland Islands .
Types of islands
Volcanic islands are those that are born due to volcanic activity at the bottom of the ocean, which generates a movement of plates in the Earth's crust. Japan and Easter Island are examples of volcanic islands.
Other types of islands are coral islands (which are created by the skeletons of primitive marine organisms known as corals. For example: the Maldives Islands ), sedimentary islands (those found in rivers and arise from the accumulation of gravel, mud and sand, such as the islands of the Paraná Delta ) and river islands (formed by particles in the central channel of a river, such as Bananal Island ).
In another sense, areas or enclosures that are separated from the surrounding space are called islands. The information island at a station or the luggage island at an airport are examples of this type of island.
