Definition of

Uninterrupted

The first thing we are going to do, before entering fully into its meaning, is to know the etymological origin of the term at hand. In this case, we can establish that the word uninterrupted derives from Latin and is the result of the sum of three lexical components of said language:

-The prefix “in-”, which can be translated as “no” or “without”.

-The verb “interrupere”, which was formed from the union of two different parts: the prefix “inter-”, which means “between”, and the verb “rumpere”, which is equivalent to “break”.

-The suffix “-ido”, which is used to indicate who has received the action.

When something develops or exists without interruptions , it is classified as uninterrupted . This adjective is used to describe what remains over time without pauses or breaks .

UninterruptedFor example: “Next week there will be 24 hours of uninterrupted tennis at the club as part of a solidarity initiative” , “During the summer, the pool will be open uninterrupted between 7 in the morning and 9 at night” , “The local team has been the leader of the championship for eighteen uninterrupted months.”

Among the words that serve as synonyms for uninterrupted we find some such as incessant, endless, continuous, constant, inexhaustible or even continuous. On the contrary, among its antonyms we find exhaustible, sporadic, intermittent or finishable.

Suppose that a country's economy has experienced eight consecutive quarters of growth. Given this reality, it can be stated that said economy registers uninterrupted growth for eight quarters. This means that economic activity grew in all those periods without exceptions.

Let's take the case of a soccer player who was part of a club in two stages: from 1998 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2007 . As can be seen, in total he spent eight years at the institution: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The eight years, however, were not uninterrupted , since in 2001 and 2002 he played in another team.

Another example of the use of the term that we are addressing refers to the field of companies. Thus, there are some that are said to have uninterrupted customer service. What this means is that the person who needs it is assisted at any time of the year, 365 days a year.

In the field of health, the term uninterrupted can also be used. A clear example of this is that health professionals have warned that the uninterrupted use of contact lenses can lead the person to suffer vision problems such as infections or even corneal perforations.

An uninterruptible power supply (or UPS , for its acronym in English uninterruptible power supply ), on the other hand, is a device that provides electrical power for a certain time once the service is cut off due to a blackout. This device, therefore, allows a piece of equipment (such as a computer or medical device) to remain in operation without interruption despite a power outage.

The UPS fulfills its function thanks to having batteries that serve to store energy. Thus, when the blackout occurs, it remains operational and provides said energy to other equipment.
