The first step we are going to take in order to know the meaning of the term indetermination is to know its etymological origin. In this case, we can establish that it derives from Latin, exactly from the word "indeterminatio", which is the result of the union of several lexical components of said language:
-The prefix «in-«, which means «no» and «without».
-The prefix «de-«, which indicates «direction from top to bottom».
-The verb "terminate", which can be translated as "put limits" or "constrain".
-The suffix "-cion", which is used to indicate "action and effect."
The idea of indeterminacy refers to the absence of determination : audacity, courage. The term can also refer to the lack of resolution (decision, disposition).
For example: "The indeterminacy of our goalkeeper was the key to the rival team's two goals" , "The situation of indeterminacy in the stock markets generated a lot of concern among investors" , "When the State does not act in these types of cases, An indeterminacy occurs that always affects the most vulnerable .
Among the many terms that can be used as synonyms for indeterminacy, we can highlight indecision, irresolution, hesitation, doubt, ambiguity , indefinition or imprecision. On the contrary, among its antonyms we find words such as resolution, decision, precision, definition or certainty, for example.
Take the case of a government in which three ministers are accused of having committed acts of corruption . The suspicions that weigh on these officials are great and even in the media, evidence is beginning to be shown that would demonstrate the existence of corruption. Given this situation, a social demand is beginning to grow for the president to ask these ministers to resign . However, the president not only does not do so, but he does not even speak publicly about the facts. Political analysts criticize the indeterminacy of the country's highest authority, since with his attitude he seems to endorse the perpetration of illegal acts in the State. Experts assure that, while the judicial process against the ministers progresses, the president should remove them from their positions at least preventively.
A footballer, meanwhile, can show indeterminacy in certain plays that he does not resolve in a timely manner . If a striker hesitates in front of the rival goal and ends up losing the ball because he did not define how to complete the play, it can be said that he suffered the consequences of his indeterminacy.
In the field of quantum mechanics we also have to point out that the term in question is used. Specifically, we talk about the Heisenberg indeterminacy relation, which is also known as the uncertainty principle.
With this aforementioned relationship, what is established is the impossibility of knowing with arbitrary precision what are pairs of physical magnitudes that are complementary and observable.
Likewise, in mathematics we talk about indeterminations that are these: infinity divided by infinity, zero by infinity, infinity raised to zero, infinity minus infinity, zero raised to zero, one raised to infinity...
