Waterfall

A digital image is a representation that is constructed using a binary matrix.

A digital image is a two-dimensional representation constructed from a binary matrix (composed of ones and zeros). It is possible to obtain these images in different ways.

Before moving forward, it is important to determine the etymological origin of the concept. In this sense, the two words that make it up come from Latin: image comes from imago , which, in turn, is the result of the derivation of the verb imitari (synonymous with "imitate" ). Digital , on the other hand, derives from digitalis , which can be translated as "relative to the finger" and is the result of the sum of the components digitus (which means "finger" ) and -al (which indicates "relative to" ).

The visual representation of an object is known as an image . This representation can be done through various procedures or techniques, such as photography , painting or video . Digital , for its part, is something related to the fingers, although the concept is currently used in the field of technology in reference to the representation of information in a binary way (in two states).

Creating a digital image

One possibility to create a digital image is to use a device that is responsible for analog-digital conversion . This is the case of a digital camera or a scanner. With such a camera , a person can take an image and store it in digital format, either on a computer ( computer ) or on another medium. The scanner, for its part, allows you to record and capture a physical image (such as a photo printed in a magazine) and transform it into a digital image.

Another option is to create digital images through software . With a basic program like Paint , it is possible to make a drawing with the help of the mouse and create a digital image.

Today's cameras allow you to obtain digital images.

The quality

When it comes to achieving a good digital image, it is essential to take care of aspects such as color depth, both input and output resolution, size, gray levels, format ( jpeg , png , gif ,...), the texture or color mode; without forgetting, of course, the saturation or brightness.

According to its resolution, the digital image can be classified in different ways. It is possible to speak, in this sense, of a matrix image or a vector image . The preference for one or another format depends on the needs of the designer or the person who will use the image.

In this sense, we would have to say that vector images are those that are composed of simple geometric shapes, such as polygons or segments of different types.

On the other hand, there are bitmap images , which are those that are characterized because they are formed from small squares that are called pixels. These are also known as bitmap images and are widely used in the world of cinema and photography because they offer a wide variety of color tones and are characterized by their high quality.
