Strike

Manifestation

A strike is usually linked to a strike: a suspension of work activities in protest.

Latin is where we can indicate that the etymological origin of the term strike that concerns us now is found. Exactly, it must be emphasized that it derives from the verb "follicare", which is synonymous with "snorting" and that it emanates, at the same time, from the noun "follis" which can be translated as "bellows".

A strike is a method of protest that workers carry out when they interrupt their work tasks to make a claim. This suspension of activity aims to cause harm to those responsible for addressing the complaint and satisfying the demands, in such a way that they are forced to give a positive response to the demands to recover the normal functioning of the company or office.

Strike as a right

The strike is usually associated with a strike : collectively, employees stop working. This mechanism allows the worker to demand an improvement in working conditions or protest against the reduction of some right .

It is important to keep in mind that striking is, in fact, a right. It is a legitimate means to defend the social and economic interests of people within the framework of an employment relationship.

Generally, a strike is not an individual decision, but rather a collective measure that is usually taken based on a union decision. The strike is reached when negotiations have already taken place without workers and employers reaching an agreement.

Complaint

With a strike you can demand the maintenance of a right or an improvement of certain conditions.

Classification according to type

There are different types of strikes. The sit-down strike , for example, takes place in the workplace , with employees remaining inactive. A Japanese-style strike , on the other hand, consists of an increase in work performance so that the company has a problem with surplus production.

Beyond the labor strike , strikes also take place to protest different issues. Hunger strikes , in this framework, involve the refusal to consume food until a grievance is resolved.

Student and feminist strikes

In the same way, we cannot forget the existence of other very important strikes such as those carried out by students. Claiming their rights in terms of education or demonstrating against government measures that threaten them are the two main reasons why these types of strikes have been carried out.

Among the most significant of this type are the student strike of 1229 at the University of Paris due to the death of several students during a revolt or the different strikes carried out by university students in Madrid during the Franco regime.

In recent years, the feminist strike on March 8, 2018, during Working Women's Day, which took place around the world, has also been very important. What was intended was that women would not work that day either inside or outside the home as a way to reclaim the role they occupy in society. Likewise, this initiative, which enjoyed great success, sought to fight discrimination, sexist violence, oppression and gender inequality. In Spain it was one of the countries where this strike had the most impact.
