Definition of

Hybrid

Mythology

A mermaid is a hybrid of a woman and a fish.

Knowing the etymological origin of the term hybrid is not an easy task, since there are several theories that exist in this regard. However, one of those that is taken as most relevant is the one that establishes that it emanates from the Latin hybrida , which can be translated as "bastard" and that, at the same time, comes from the Greek hemionos , which means "mule."

In the broadest sense, a hybrid is defined as something that presents characteristics or elements of a different nature .

hybrid organism

A hybrid organism is a specimen whose parents belong to different species . It can be a vegetable or an animal.

A wolfdog , for example, is a hybrid that is born when a dog (a member of the species Canis lupus familiaris ) mates with a gray wolf (other subspecies of Canis lupus ). The split between dogs and wolves took place about 14,000 years ago, and since then they have interbred only occasionally.

A liger , on the other hand, is an animal that is born when a lion crosses with a tigress. This hybrid resembles a large lion with tiger stripes; In the case of males, ligers have manes, like lions.

In the field of plants , an edible species that arose from the crossing of turnip ( Brassica rapa ) and cabbage ( Brassica oleracea ) is called rutabaga or turnip . Its scientific name is Brassica x napobrassica .

Vehicle

A hybrid vehicle can run on fuel or electricity.

Vehicles with electricity and fuel

A hybrid vehicle , finally, is one that can be mobilized with electricity or fuel . This means that its propulsion combines a combustion engine and an electric motor.

The Toyota Prius is one of the most popular hybrid cars. It began to be marketed in 1997 in Japan and later reached many other countries. The model is now in its fourth generation.

Advantages and disadvantages of hybrid cars

There is more and more demand in the market for hybrid cars and that is because they offer a relevant series of advantages, among which we can highlight some such as the following:

-They are more efficient than traditional vehicles and this represents significant economic savings in terms of fuel.

-No less significant is the fact that they are much more respectful of the environment and contribute to taking care of it.

-They have become a great option for moving around the city since they generate a lot of electricity when braking and that maximizes their use.

-In the same way, it must be taken into account that another great advantage of hybrid cars is that they do not generate noise pollution.

-Buying this type of car allows you to enjoy a series of tax benefits.

-In some cities, vehicles of this type are allowed to drive in what is the HOV lane.

On the contrary, their disadvantages include that they have a higher price, that they have less power or that their maintenance is usually much more expensive.
