Clothing workmanship

The making of clothes is also called "making"

The Latin word factūra came into Spanish as workmanship . This is what the act and result of doing are called.

Synonym of composition

The external shape of something and the composition of a body or an object are also known as workmanship: “I was surprised by the workmanship of the cake” , “I think this product is of good workmanship” , “I don't know what the workmanship of this element contains” .

In these three examples we can appreciate the meaning of this term that refers to its formation, configuration, form, constitution or disposition , among other synonyms. It could also be said that when admiring the making of a cake or a product in general we talk about its "image", its "appearance", although deep down we care more about its structure, the processes that were carried out to manufacture it.

Clothing workmanship

Crafting, on the other hand, is the activity carried out by someone who cuts, sews and embroiders the fabric to give a certain shape to a piece of clothing . For clothing to last longer and fit well to the body, it is essential that the workmanship is of good quality.

This is the most used meaning in some regions, where the first image that comes to mind when hearing the word workmanship is that of a person making a piece of clothing. Although tradition makes us think of a woman, we must not forget that all human activities can be carried out by both sexes, and that, in fact, many men dedicate themselves to clothing design.

Some examples

For example: “I think that, to make the beams, we are going to use wood” , “The making of the film took two years due to different problems that arose in the production stage and during filming” , “The whole town "He participated in the making of the largest tortilla in the world."

Given that in its etymology we find the lexical components that give us the idea of "the result of doing", it is not difficult to understand the meaning that this word has in the three sentences just explained. The beams will be made or manufactured of wood; The film took a long time to make ; The people made an omelet of unprecedented dimensions.

The lithic carving

The stone carving that is carried out by altering the morphology to achieve a particular shape is called workmanship. Generally the workmanship aims to create a mechanism for attaching to a handle or handle or to obtain a functional region.

Lithic carving workmanship

Lithic carving includes the making process

It is important to mention that lithic carving is considered the most important productive process of the Stone Age . This carving involves using pressure or percussion to cut and shape the stone. Crafting, in this framework, involves modifying a flake or edge for a specific purpose.

For lithic carving, hard rock with a conchoidal fracture was chosen as raw material, whose breakage is shell-shaped, has a concave and a convex side and its surface can be striated or smooth. The reason is that it can be controlled easily. Flint was the most used rock, although there are also utensils made of quartz, basalt, fine-grained quartzite and chert, among others.

Returning to the concept of workmanship , which falls under that of lithic carving, it is the roughing of a fragment of rock , that is, it is started from a natural material and polished to be used for a particular use. This gives rise to a byproduct that may or may not be used, which is known as flake . The cutting process is called lascado , and the workmanship is part of the carving itself, where we also find the concept of retouching .
