Gynecology

Women's health

The specialty of medicine focused on the female reproductive system is known as gynecology.

Gynecology is the medical specialty dedicated to the care of the female reproductive system . Gynecologists , therefore, are specialists who deal with issues related to the uterus , vagina , and ovaries .

The Greek physician Soranus , of the Methodist school, is considered the author of the first treatise on gynecology. The advance of medicine has associated gynecology with obstetrics , which deals with pregnancy , childbirth and the puerperium. Today, most gynecologists are obstetricians and vice versa.

Gynecology allows for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, prolapse, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia and infertility. To carry out their work, gynecologists use instruments such as the speculum , which enables examinations of the vagina and cervix.

Gynecological studies and tests

Women should have regular gynecological check-ups to maintain good health and prevent disorders . However, the intimate nature of these tests creates a certain amount of discomfort and often means that they are postponed.

The Papanicolaou test , also known as vaginal cytology or Pap , is the most common gynecological test. The gynecologist takes samples of the epithelial cells found in the transition zone of the cervix, which allows him to determine the hormonal status, identify inflammatory changes and guide a possible diagnosis of cervical cancer.

Invented by the Greek doctor Georgios Papanicolaou ( 18831962 ), it is a simple, cheap and efficient test that should be performed by all women from the beginning of their sexual life until approximately 65 years of age.

Attention to pregnant women

Gynecology is associated with obstetrics, which is focused on the care of pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Safe sex

The gynecologist becomes a woman's personal advisor in some way in matters related to her sexuality and the care of her intimate organs. He will be the one who, after studying the case of each patient, will recommend one or another contraceptive method, so when having sex it is important to go to a specialist in this field so that he can advise us in the way that best suits us and have a safe and healthy experience .

A contraceptive method is one that prevents or reduces the chances of fertilization occurring; they are essential when talking about birth control (the number of children you want to have) and represent a way to maintain safe sexual relations.

In any case, it is important to note that there are no better methods than others, but rather ones that are more suitable for each particular circumstance ; a gynecologist would be the most appropriate person to recommend the one that best suits us and to monitor the impact that the use of one or another method has on our body. In addition, if you wish to use an internal condom, he or she will be the person who will put it on and make sure that everything is working properly.

When helping us choose one method or another, the gynecologist will ask us a series of questions and perform checkups about our general health, how often we plan to have sex, etc.

Importance of gynecology

Every time a woman begins her sexual life, it is highly recommended that she be seen by her gynecologist, so that she can ensure a healthy experience and, above all, without the risk of becoming pregnant , if that is not what she wants.

Hence the great importance of gynecology in the life of every woman. It can significantly contribute to her overall health and allow her to feel less alone when it comes to taking care of herself.
