Gas is a fluid of low density.

Gas is matter that has a low density and, therefore, can extend indefinitely. The word was coined by the scientist Jan Baptista van Helmont in the first half of the 17th century , from the Latin word chaos .

This allows us to say that gas is the state of aggregation of a matter that lacks its own volume and shape , something that allows it to be differentiated from a liquid or a solid .

Gas characteristics

When talking about gas we have to determine that there are several hallmarks that clearly identify them with respect to other types of fluid . Thus, among them is the fact that there is a great vacuum distance between the particles that make it up , which makes its understanding possible.

In the same way, it is also established that the aforementioned particles are in motion at all times, which means that they are colliding with the walls of the containers that contain them and on which they exert pressure .

And all this without forgetting the fact that when two gases come into contact, a mixture is produced in which particles of both are perfectly and uniformly distributed. This is achieved thanks to both the aforementioned movement that they have at all times and the large space that exists between them.

Fire

There are gases that can be used as fuel.

a fuel

The term is used, generically, to refer to gases capable of generating combustion and used in the home or industry . For example: “Be careful with that stove that has little gas and does not cook well” , “We have to pay for the gas or they will cut it off and we will have to shower with cold water” , “A gas leak caused the explosion” .

Gas, on the other hand, is the combination between air and a fuel product that is used to start an engine : “I have to fill the car with gas so we can get to the beach without a problem,” “I want to buy a car that runs at gas because it is cheaper than gasoline.”

Thanks to its capacity as fuel , the notion of gas is used, in a figurative sense, as a synonym for impulse , force or start : “This team must be given gas, it cannot be that they lose three games in a row at home” , “I "We need gas, I can't stand another night awake because of studying."

Types of gases

Currently we can establish that we encounter a wide variety of gases. Thus, for example, we talk about what is called city gas , which is gas that is distributed through urban networks to ensure that each home has the necessary fuel to be able to carry out actions such as cooking or enjoying hot water.

In the same way, there is laughing gas that is defined because it has a series of anesthetic-type characteristics or properties.

This term, in addition to everything mentioned above, is used in a series of popular expressions such as “full gas” which means that a person or a vehicle is operating at a high speed .

It should be noted, finally, that all those gases that are generated in the digestive system are known as gas. Flatulence is the gaseous mixture expelled through the anus that has a very particular sound and smell .
