Gambit

Opening

The gambit is a chess opening.

The etymology of gambit refers us to the Italian language. In this language the word gambetto appears, which can be translated as "trip" .

In Spanish, we find the term gambit linked to the world of chess . It is a move that leads, at the beginning of a confrontation, to the sacrifice of a piece with the aim of achieving a positive position for the aspirations of its promoter.

How the gambit plays out

The gambit is part of what is known as the opening : the initial stage of a game. In the opening, the player seeks to organize the pieces in a certain way to build an advantage over his opponent.

With the gambit, the chess player is willing to lose a piece - usually a pawn - in pursuit of a profit. The purpose of the gambit is to cause a positional failure in the opponent or to gain time (since the other player will have to reorganize).

Once the piece to be sacrificed is left at the mercy of the opponent, the gambit can be accepted or rejected. If the contestant finally takes the piece in question, acceptance of the gambit occurs.

Science game

With the gambit, the chess player sacrifices a piece to gain an advantage.

Classification according to type

It can be said that the gambit is based on offering material . Depending on the piece being invited and the subsequent movements, it is possible to differentiate between different gambits.

Some are named after pieces, such as the queen's gambit or the king's gambit . Others are associated with countries : the Scottish gambit , the Danish gambit or the Latvian gambit .

There are also gambits that, with their name , pay tribute to their creator. In this case we can talk about openings such as the Rousseau gambit (reminiscent of the French master Eugéne Rousseau ) and the Evans gambit (in honor of the British William Davies Evans ).

The answer to the gambit

When a chess player proposes a gambit, his opponent can react in various ways. By offering another gambit in response , he poses what is known as a countergambit .

The countergambit, then, represents a counterattack. The Falkbeer countergambit (by the Austrian Ernst Falkbeer ) and the Albin countergambit (related to the Romanian Adolf Albin ) are two such moves.

A novel and a series

In 2020 , with the premiere of a series on the Netflix platform, the word gambit gained great popularity. The work in question, whose original title was translated as "The Queen's Gambit" , won two awards at the Golden Globe Awards .

The proposal is an adaptation of a novel by the American Walter Tevis : "The Queen's Gambit" ( "Queen's Gambit" or "Lady's Gambit" ). This book was published in 1983 .
