Brakes

Handle

Brakes cause a vehicle to slow or stop moving.

Brake is the mechanism that allows a device to stop or reduce its progress . Brakes are responsible for transforming the kinetic energy of an object (such as a car) into work or heat .

For example: "The accident occurred because the Fiat's brakes failed and its driver could not stop the vehicle," "Tomorrow I am going to take the car to the mechanic to check the brakes," "I think the bicycle brakes work." bad."

Types of brakes

There are various types of brakes. Friction brakes are those that act precisely through friction forces . They have a fixed element that exerts pressure on the object that is intended to be decelerated. Within this group, it is possible to distinguish between drum brakes (friction is produced by pads that exert pressure on the inside of a drum that rotates and is attached to the axle or wheel), band brakes (with a flexible band that exerts tension on a cylinder attached to the axis to be manipulated), rim brakes (common on bicycles) and disc brakes (they act on the rotation of the wheel).

Other types of brakes are electric brakes (create electrical current for braking), mechanical brakes (transmit force through cables or levers), pneumatic brakes (which operate with compressed air), and hydraulic brakes (with a fluid which is transmitted via pistons).

In the automotive field, we must highlight the prominence that the so-called ABS brakes have had for some decades, which are an anti-lock system for car wheels. Thanks to this, what is achieved is that during the braking process of those, the tires achieve greater grip. In this way, there is a strong commitment to the safety of all individuals inside said vehicles.

Automobile

A car can have different types of brakes.

Expressions with the term

Likewise, we must not ignore the existence of a multitude of expressions that use the term we are now dealing with. In this way we find, for example, "running without brakes" , which determines that a person in question is living at a dizzying pace that is making him or her enjoy all kinds of pleasures.

Much more colloquial is the expression "downhill and without brakes" . It is used when you want to express that either a person or a situation is at a point where everything seems to be heading in a dangerous way, there is no turning back, it is going very fast and it seems to indicate that the results are going to be disastrous.

In some countries, finally, the dental device that allows you to correct the deviation of the teeth is known as braces: "I have been using braces since I was fourteen years old," "The dentist recommended that I use braces."
