Pit

The etymology of fossa leads us to the Latin term fossa , derived from fodĕre (which can be translated as “to dig” ). The concept has several uses according to the context.

PitA grave can be an excavation that is developed with the aim of burying one or more people. For example: “The police found the young woman's body in a grave made in the garden of her house” , “The murderer tried to hide the grave with plants and flowers” , “The shooter made the victim dig his own grave” .

A common grave is the one used for the burial of corpses that, for various reasons, are not given their own burial. Mass graves can develop in the context of wars , illegal repression, epidemics or natural disasters. The Nazis, to cite one case, used to throw the bodies of their victims into mass graves.

In Spain, unfortunately, there are numerous mass graves spread throughout its territory and in which people who were executed during the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco are buried. Specifically, during that repressive period, once the Civil War ended, thousands of citizens were murdered simply for their political ideas contrary to the regime and they were thrown into mass graves without even their families being able to know where their remains were.

Currently, there are still many families who still do not know exactly the whereabouts of the remains of their loved ones murdered by Franco.

Of all the mass graves in Spain, there is one that stands out for being the largest of all. We are referring to the one found in the San Rafael Cemetery, in Malaga, where more than 33,000 people are buried.

In this country and, as a result of the approval of the Historical Memory Law, there are several associations that are fighting to find those aforementioned graves in order to discover who is buried in them and that in this way their families, finally , they can say goodbye to their loved ones.

However, it should not be overlooked that in other corners of the world there are also mass graves as a result of the serious conflicts that took place there, such as wars and totalitarian regimes. Thus, there are also in Budapest or Colombia, for example.

A septic tank or cesspool , on the other hand, is a space that, when there are no sewers in a home, is used to store wastewater. In the field of the hydrocarbon industry, the notion of pit is used to refer to the hole that is made next to the oil well to accumulate drilling waste.

In ancient times, ditches used to be dug around forts . In this way, the siege and access to the fortification were made difficult.

For anatomy , a fossa is a body cavity . The nasal passages , in this framework, are the cavities that are separated by a septum. These pits are the beginning of the respiratory system, since they allow the entry and exit of air.
