Folio

old books

The sheet of a notebook, notebook or book can be referred to as a folio.

The Latin word folium , which can be translated as “leaf” , came to our language as folio . The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) recognizes several meanings of the term.

The first meaning that the RAE includes refers to the page of a notebook, a notebook, etc. However, in some contexts, folio and sheet are not used as synonyms, since certain differences can be found.

What is a folio

In a broad sense, a sheet of parchment or paper that is part of some type of publication is called a folio. In this context, it is important to indicate that manuscripts, since approximately the 13th century , are usually numbered according to the folios, using Roman numerals .

The folio, in this way, has a front face that is known as recto and a back face that is called verso . The recto is abbreviated with an r , while the verse is abbreviated with a v .

It should be noted that the idea of a sheet refers to a sheet that, although it can be made of paper, can also be made of wood, metal or other material. In certain cases, therefore, it cannot be used to replace folio.

Around the 13th century, manuscript folios began to be numbered with Roman numerals.

Other uses of the concept

The parts resulting from folding a paper into a notebook or book are referred to as folios. A sheet can be folded one, two or three times to obtain two, four or eight pages per side, generating multiple folios.

There is, on the other hand, a paper format known as folio. Currently, a paper whose dimensions are 12 x 19 inches (that is, 30.5 x 48.3 centimeters) is called a folio. Some time ago, however, the folio was 8.5 x 12.4 inches (21.5 x 31.5 centimeters).

In this area, it should be noted that folio is a format linked to the size of the paper, just like A4 , legal or letter . Standards vary by region .

Plastic foil

Another use of the notion is linked to a plastic envelope . Folios, in this sense, are used to store or protect sheets of paper , generally when they constitute documents or materials of a certain relevance.

A student, for example , can save and present practical work on a sheet of paper. Thus, the leaves are protected. The delivery of the contents to the teacher who must evaluate them is also facilitated.

One possibility is to use a folio to preserve the documentation of a home or a car , to mention two possibilities. Certificates of various procedures and payment receipts can be contained in plastic sheets.

Valuable edition of a book

Folio, finally, is the name given to a particular edition of a work that has special value. It is common to speak, in this context, of William Shakespeare 's First Folio .

This First Folio brings together the first publications of 36 plays by the British playwright. The compilation and editing are attributed to Henry Condell and John Heminges , who would have carried out the task in 1623 . Experts believe that around 800 copies were printed.
