Definition of

Skinny

SkinnyThe Latin word flaccus came to Spanish as flaco . This is what a thin person , whose weight is low , is called. Being skinny, therefore, is the opposite of being fat.

For example: “You are very skinny! You should eat more” , “I would like to be skinnier for the summer” , “I was skinny as a child, but over the years I gained weight and now I am quite overweight” .

It is important to highlight that the concept of skinny is not precise nor does it have a specific definition or one based on criteria that can be measured. A person can be skinny by nature and be healthy: another person, on the other hand, can suffer from a health problem and therefore be skinny. Being underweight, therefore, is a fact that deserves attention, just like being overweight.

These particularities of the weight and appearance of human beings very often lead to misconceptions about health and beauty. On the one hand, the average person wants to look thin, especially when summer approaches, to be able to dress fashionably and show off a body that they consider attractive. However, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, there are many people who cannot avoid extreme thinness, precisely because in their case it is due to health problems.

Being skinny is for many a goal that is related to beauty , while others interpret this as a problem and prefer less stylized bodies. We must not forget that not everyone can achieve a physical state worthy of admiration, since there are several genetic factors that predispose us to thinness or robustness, for example, such as the size of the bones and the tendency to gain weight. For this reason, everyone should respect their own body and simply worry about enjoying good health.

In Spanish-speaking countries, the comic duo composed of actors Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy , of North American origin, who began their career together in the 1920s, in silent films , are known as El Gordo y el Flaco .

The duo of "Laurel and Hardy" had considerable success internationally, and their work together lasted until the mid-20th century. Their first collaboration took place in the 1918 silent film called The Lucky Dog , where they did not exactly act as a comic duo, since the beginning of their peculiar bond occurred in the film The Second Hundred Years , in 1926.

SkinnyJust as in other groups of comedians, the secret of this duo lies in the degree of synchronization they had when they worked together: they seemed to not need words or prior organization to generate unforgettable moments of humor, as if they were constantly anticipating what what the other would do and in this way they could complement it.

It is common for a thin individual to be nicknamed “Skinny.” The Argentine musician Luis Alberto Spinetta , to cite one case, was known as “Flaco” Spinetta . The same nickname that coach César Luis Menotti and actor Manuel Ibáñez have, among many other personalities.

When something lacks energy , vigor, solidity or strength, on the other hand, it is usually described as weak: “With such a weak argument you will not be able to convince anyone” , “The defender's weak effort was not enough to prevent the goal” , “It was a poor end to the career of a singer who knew how to achieve glory and then fell into oblivion.”

Flaccus , finally, is the translation of the Roman name Flaccus : Gaius Norbanus Flaccus , Quintus Fulvius Flaccus and Valerius Flaccus are known by this name in our language .
