Fas

Roman empire

In Ancient Rome, fas was the law that emanated from divinity.

Fas is a term used in the field of law . It is a word of Latin origin that can be translated as “lawful” or “just” .

In the time of the Roman Empire , fas was associated with the will of divinity . In other words: divine law , which emanated from what was expressed and permitted by the gods, was fas. On the other hand, there was ius , the law established by human beings .

Just as fas was fair, the opposite was nefas (translatable as “illegal” or “unjust” ). The Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), in this framework, includes the adverbial phrase por fas or por nefas in its dictionary, which refers to what is concretized either by one thing or another or to what is done with justice or unjustly.

The jurisprudence of the pontiffs

The priests, as representatives or interpreters of divinity , were those who established and administered the fas. Anything contrary to the fas was sanctioned according to the rules dictated by the religious, who in turn created different legal institutions.

The so-called priestly colleges collaborated with the monarch in the management of public affairs through the interpretation of the divine will. Over time , however, progress was made with secular jurisprudence , a process that led to the consideration of fas as the ius divinum (religious norms).

Historical development of the fas

The fas, in short, was made up of rules emanating from the gods . Since religion initially governed the organization of Roman society, the fas and the ius were mixed.

The regulation of the link between the human and the divine was the responsibility of the fas. The fast was the just; the nefarious , the unjust. The pontiffs, meanwhile, advised on legal matters, so the boundary between the legal and the religious was blurred.

However, progressive secularization led to the differentiation between divine law and human law. Beginning with the Law of the XII Tables , which was developed in the middle of the 5th century BC , the law of men began to consolidate.

Biology

Fas is a protein involved in apoptosis.

A protein

Fas is a protein that is involved in apoptosis (cell death programmed by the body itself to control its development). This apoptosis is induced by the activation of caspases (a type of enzyme), an action that can be triggered by different pathways.

One of them requires that certain ligands (substances that form complexes ) bind to certain receptors . The FasL ligand can thus bind to Fas to initiate cell death.

FAS as an acronym

Finally, it should be noted that FAS is an acronym that can refer to different organizations and institutions . In this sense, we can speak of the Club Deportivo Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos ( FAS ), an entity from El Salvador .

Club Deportivo FAS was founded in 1947 and competes in the first division championship of its country. One of its most important historical figures is Jorge “Mágico” González , who scored 73 goals with the club in two periods ( 1977-82 and 1991-99 ).

The Southern Air Force (which was part of the Argentine Air Force and was active in the Falklands War ) and the Anti-Imperialist and Socialist Front (present in Argentine politics from 1973 to 1975 ) are also referred to as FAS .
