Canvas

The mats are used on the beach.

Esterilla is the diminutive of estera . A mat, meanwhile, is a fabric of considerable thickness that is used as a ground cover and for other purposes.

The notion of mat has several meanings, all linked to various textile products. It is important to mention that different materials are used to make the mats. That is why we can talk about bamboo mats , palm mats , PVC mats , rubber mats , etc.

The mat as an insulator

It is common for the concept of a mat to be used to name that product that is placed on the surface so that, once the person is placed on it, they do not have contact with the humidity, cold or dirt of the floor.

Mats, in this context, are usually used on the beach . To avoid sitting or lying on the sand, many individuals place a mat. In these cases, mats are also useful for supporting objects (such as a bag or clothes) without them getting dirty.

An insulating mat , on the other hand, is a thin mattress or mat made of an insulating material and used as a base for the bag or sleeping bag or directly for the body. These mats are usually used in camping .

The yoga mat

The mat used to practice yoga can be called a mat. The custom of covering the ground for the development of this discipline began in India and later spread to other countries.

Position

It is common to use a mat to practice yoga.

In the Western world, towels were first used until mats designed specifically for yoga were invented. Rubber, polyester and PVC are the most used materials.

The yoga mat is intended to provide cushioning for the implementation of the postures and to protect from the cold . They generally have an adhesive side, thus preventing them from slipping.

Electric mats

Electric mats have a resistance for heat generation. Also known as heating pads , they can be used on the body or on an element that is intended to be heated.

At a general level, the electric mat has two main uses. On the one hand, it allows you to provide heat either to a body part (such as the legs or torso) or to an object (a bed , an armchair) in order to combat the cold. On the other hand, heat can be used to relieve an ailment.

Many times electric mats have a thermostat (a device that allows a certain temperature to be kept stable). In this way, thanks to a switch with several positions, the user can choose the temperature of the pad.

Regional uses of the term

The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) recognizes several regional uses of the word mat. In Uruguay , for example, a mat is a grid of rods or reeds that is used as a ceiling or curtain and that, thanks to a flexible seam, can be rolled up.

In countries like Venezuela and Ecuador , meanwhile, the mat is also a grid , used in this case in backrests or seats. For Costa Ricans , the mat is the blanket that is placed under the tack or saddle of a horse as a saddle.
