Scholar

Study

A scholar spends much of his time studying.

From the Latin erudītus , a scholar is one who is educated in different sciences , arts or disciplines . In this sense, a scholar is a type of wise man who can speak with fundamentals on the most varied topics. The term, however, also refers to the person who knows the issues of a certain science in depth. For example: “My grandfather was a scholar, he could give you classes on any topic” , “Richard Goffton, the leading international scholar in Egyptology, will visit the country to give a series of lectures” .

There are many characters who throughout history have been described as scholars. This would be the case of figures of the stature of Plato, Karl Marx, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante Alighieri or Francesco Petrarca, among many others. All of them people who made their knowledge evident in one or several disciplines.

The importance of the study

Erudition can only develop over the years and through study . Beyond a person's innate ability or natural talent, the phrase “no one is born knowing” can be applied to the lives of the great scholars of history. The reading of hundreds of books and documents, the hours dedicated to reflection, practices of all kinds and intellectual discussions with colleagues make a subject become a scholar.

The figure of the scholar or wise man, in ancient times, was associated with an elderly man who was a source of consultation for rulers and society in general. Currently, this social figure no longer exists, although no leader can ignore the need to have the advice of specialists in various matters.

Scholars are usually a source of consultation.

Sciolist

There is a phrase that refers to false scholars: violet scholar . This concept indicates those people who have only superficial knowledge of sciences and arts.

Specifically, we can also establish that there is a narrative work carried out by the Spanish writer José Cadalso (1741 – 1782) entitled “The Scholars of the Violet” . In 1772 it was published that achieved great success and was precisely the one that popularized the aforementioned expression. This book was a prose satire on the education system existing at the time.

The concept in entertainment

In addition to all of the above, we cannot ignore the fact that there is also an important and famous video game titled “Erudito” . Specifically, it is a type of online entertainment that takes a school environment as its setting and that fundamentally seeks to facilitate not only the teachers' work in the classroom but also the learning of the students themselves in an entertaining way adapted to the times. .

But it is not the only game that uses the term we are addressing in its title. We also found a board game called “The Erudite” . Specifically, it is a question and answer game where participants must demonstrate their knowledge about various areas but also their ability to reason.
