Framing

Scene

The frame represents the delimitation of a scene.

Framing is the act and result of framing : adjusting to a frame , setting limits, fitting. In the field of photography, television and cinema, the scene recorded by the objective (lens) of the camera in each shot is called a frame.

The action of framing, therefore, involves delimiting a scene through the camera lens. The result of this procedure is known as framing.

Before framing, it is common to make a composition : the grouping and combination of the elements that will be photographed or filmed. The goal is for the result to be balanced and harmonious.

What is framing

Framing can be understood as the registration of a cut of reality based on the choice and organization of the elements that will appear in an image. The photographer or videographer determines the frame through the composition and the fragment of the scene that he or she decides to capture.

Usually in all images there is a motif (what justifies the scene) and a background (everything that surrounds the motif). The subject must be the main element of the frame: in this way, the person portraying the scene must make sure to exclude anything that could create a distraction. At the same time, it is important that you keep a margin around the motif so that it can shine.

From vision to lens

Photographers assure that photographs are taken first with the eyes, meaning that the perfect combination of scene , lighting and framing must be found, and then immortalized with a camera. The main difference between our vision and a lens lies in the limits, and that is why it is so important to learn to take advantage of the edges to enhance the effects of our work.

Although it may not seem like it, getting a good frame for a photograph or film is something that not many people can achieve, since it is a combination of talent, good taste and many technical concepts. The most common mistake we make when portraying an object or subject is placing it in the exact center of the frame, something that can be useful on certain occasions but deprives the final work of movement.

Photographer

When framing, a photographer must consider several issues.

How to frame a photo

There are three fundamental ways in which we can frame a photograph:

* decide in advance the characteristics of the frame, and then configure the camera so that the parameters allow us to realize our idea;

* compose the image as we frame it. This may seem less professional, but if it is an unforeseen situation there is no way to plan the composition in advance;

* take the photograph and then adjust the framing using a digital tool on a computer.

Post-production and digital tools

Framing in the post-production stage is very common today, both in photography and video, and can give very satisfactory results if done with good taste. However, it has a limitation that is impossible to ignore: the resolution of the original image is crucial when choosing a frame, since we cannot enlarge it indefinitely.

This digital framing technique is widely used in nature photography, where we frequently find unmissable moments that we must capture without time to make decisions about the composition. A good tip is to use the highest possible resolution and save in raw format ( RAW ), to have as much information as possible when working on the computer.

Setting in the social sciences

In the context of social sciences , on the other hand, the scheme that allows a person to interpret reality and react to it is called framing.

These are, in this way, psychological structures that allow the subject to give the world meaning.
