Splice

Electricity

A splice allows two cables to be joined in the same installation.

Splicing is the act and result of splicing : combining, coupling or joining something. The term is also used to name what is spliced, the place where it is spliced and the way the union is carried out.

For example: “Tomorrow afternoon the water supply will be interrupted due to tasks related to the connection of networks” , “A collision at the junction of routes 6 and 213 left four people injured” , “I had to make a connection to “Be able to connect the air conditioning equipment .”

It is possible to find splices in multiple contexts. Two pipes or pipes can be joined together for the development or growth of a network , for example. The splice itself is the point of the union or the piece that is used to carry it out.

Electrical connection

An electrical splice , on the other hand, consists of joining two or more cables in the same device or installation. This task must be carried out by someone with the appropriate knowledge since, if it is not done correctly, there may be failures and even fires may occur due to excessive heat or sparks caused by a poor splice.

It is important to keep in mind that, in some areas, splicing is prohibited due to its risks . Electrical splices can be braided, union or extension, three types that serve to achieve different objectives, as detailed below:

* Braided electrical splice : It is also known as a mouse tail splice and is the easiest to make. It is used to complement the assembly of electrical circuits or in so-called junction boxes, among other cases. The requirement is that the cables cannot be moved or subjected to any force that threatens to alter their position or degree of support;

* electrical extension splice : This type is also known as double twist and is used to extend a cable or to repair one that has been cut. In particular, it is used in installations such as power lines or telephone lines, which fall into the group of overhead lines;

* junction electrical splice : another name by which this type of splice is known is branch . Its application is the branching of one or two cables that are connected to a main line. It can be made both single and double and can also be knotted to increase the degree of work safety .

Road

A road junction can improve circulation.

The importance of security

Before making an electrical connection, it is necessary to ensure that you have the appropriate tools and elements so that the procedure does not cause accidents.

It is very important to note that this work should not be done in a hurry or in places where there is a risk of leaks. The three essential items are a flat screwdriver, electrician's scissors or a wire stripper , and a terminal block.

The safest procedure begins by cutting the outer sheath of the cable using scissors, always paying special attention to the integrity of the filaments. Then, while holding the cable with the scissors, we must press it gently and twist it to remove the sheath without cutting the filaments. Finally, it is time to use the terminal, whose screws we must loosen before inserting the filaments of each of the cables and adjusting them again, without applying too much pressure.

Other uses of the term splice

Two or more routes ( roads ) can be joined through a junction. These are works that facilitate the circulation of vehicles between different cities.

Empalme , finally, is the name of a Mexican city and a term that appears in the name of other towns, such as Empalme Villa Constitución ( Argentina ) and Empalme Olmos ( Uruguay ).
