Delivery

Distribution

The delivery service is called delivery.

The term delivery is not part of the dictionary prepared by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), but its use is very frequent in our language. Delivery is the delivery service offered by a business to deliver its products to the buyer's home.

Generally, establishments dedicated to food preparation have a delivery service . The delivery is usually carried out by employees who travel by motorcycle or bicycle , although delivery can also be carried out by car or even on foot .

How to request delivery

For the customer to request delivery, the business must have some means of communication . For many years the telephone was the most common method of contact: the buyer called the place and an employee took note of the order. Then, the product was sent through the person responsible for delivery.

Currently delivery can also be ordered through the Internet . From a form on a website to an application on a mobile device, there are different digital tools that make it possible to request delivery.

Suppose that a young man who lives alone does not feel like cooking and makes the decision to order a pizza delivery . The boy enters the website of his favorite pizzeria and, through software , selects his menu: a large pizza with ham and tomato. The system informs you that, in half an hour, you will receive your order. After that time period, a pizzeria employee arrives on a motorcycle to your house with the pizza in question. The young man pays for his purchase, leaves a tip for the delivery person and then prepares to have dinner.

e-commerce

On platforms like eBay, sending products through some delivery method is very common.

Cultural change

Although we are quite accustomed to what some call "the culture of delivery", technological advances in the media and robotics continue to open the doors to new ways of receiving our purchases without having to go out. First of all is the already mentioned list of possible communication channels to place orders: until the early 90s it was unthinkable to buy a pizza using the computer, but today we would find it difficult to believe that something could not be purchased from this mode.

In the film titled The Network , published in 1995 and starring the American actress Sandra Bullock , we see a young computer analyst who does not leave her computer even to order food at home , in scenes that even at that time seemed typical of an ideal future in many parts of the world. A few years later, almost all areas of commerce began to rely on sales over the Internet, and this phenomenon was largely driven by companies such as eBay .

eBay, emblem of delivery

eBay is a site that is dedicated to the sale and auction of products, both new and second-hand, in almost all countries in the world. It is one of the pioneers in this field, since it was founded in 1995, and offers three types of transaction : the auction , in which the seller decides the starting price and the duration of the advertisement, throughout which potential buyers place their bids; “Buy it now!” , an advertisement with a fixed price that allows offers from interested users who do not have sufficient budget; classified ad , focused especially on local sales, with fewer options than the previous two.

Currently, eBay is synonymous with delivery, in that the majority of transactions carried out through this means involve the shipment of products by postal services.
