Decade

The term decade we can establish that it has its etymological origin in Latin. Hence it derives from “decade” which, in turn, emanates from the Greek “dekas”, which can be translated as “ten”.

A decade is a period or stage of ten years .

DecadeFor example: “The hippie movement was very popular in the '60s” , “This team has not been champion for a decade” , “The Conservative Party aspires to remain in power for at least another decade” .

Generally the idea of a decade is used with respect to the tens of each century . If we focus on the 20th century , in this framework, we can talk about the '20s , the '40s , the '60s , the '70s or the '90s , to name a few possibilities. The decade of the '20s , in this case, refers to the years 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929. The following year (1930), the decade of the '30s begins.

A decade, however, can be any period of a dozen years, also called a decade . If a woman worked from 2004 to 2014 in company X, she can claim that she worked for a decade in the company in question.

It is interesting to know that, throughout History, there have been very specific stages that, due to their unique characteristics, have been defined with the term in question. This would be the case, for example, of the so-called Ominous Decade, which is the one that took place between the years 1823 and 1833, after the Liberal Triennium. Specifically, it corresponds to the last phase of the reign of Ferdinand VII (1814 – 1833) in Spain and is also known as the second restoration of absolutism.

Sometimes the term decade is used somewhat imprecisely, referring to a period of more than ten years. In Argentina , the thirteen-year period that began in 1930 (when a coup d' état ended the constitutional government of Hipólito Yrigoyen ) and ended in 1943 (when another coup occurred, this time against Ramón Castillo ) is named the Infamous Decade .

In the same way, we cannot ignore that there is a musical group that responds to the name “The prodigious decade.” It is Spanish, it began in 1983 and is part of the so-called pop genre.

He is known mainly because he makes covers and medleys of hit songs, although he also has some of his own. A good example of the latter is that he represented Spain in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest with the composition titled “Made in Spain. "The girl I want."

Manel Santisteban, Javier de Juan and Manuel Aguilar are the creators of this band that achieved enormous success with albums such as “Los años 60. Vol 1”, “Los años 70” or “Baila con la decade”.
