The idea of tailoring is usually linked to the manufacturing of clothing.

Confection , which has its origin in the Latin word confectio , is a term that refers to the action of preparing or making certain things from a mixture or a combination of others. It is possible, in this sense, to make clothing, medicines, perfumes, etc.

For example: “The making of this dress is defective: I'm going to complain to the store” , “It took me several hours but the making of the curtain is already finished” , “Dr. Staindbrush is still working on making an antidote” .

In colloquial language, meanwhile, the idea of confection is used to name various things that are put together or made from the union of parts : “To prepare this report, we had to analyze dozens of investigations and studies on the topic."

Clothing in the textile industry

The most common use of the notion of clothing is in the textile industry . In general, the action of making appears linked to cutting , since they are essential activities for the creation of clothing items. People dedicated to sewing, dressmakers and tailors are some of the specialists who are dedicated to clothing.

It is possible, therefore, to differentiate between clothing items that are offered ready-made and those that are custom-made. The former are usually made in various sizes so that the buyer can choose the one that best suits their body . In personalized tailoring, on the other hand, the buyer's exact body measurements are taken and the dressmaker is in charge of making the garment according to these parameters.

The cutting and sewing tasks are carried out after the design of the garments.

Manufacture of clothing

From an industrial perspective, the production of clothing is defined as a series of manufacturing activities that lead to the creation of clothing, based on a design previously made and with the help of the appropriate technological tools to optimize the necessary processes.

In the making of garments two stages can be distinguished: pre-production and production .

Pre-production

It is a series of operations that must be carried out before starting the actual preparation, of certain decisions that must be made to shape the work, and they are the following:

* management policies : these are the management guidelines of a company, which are established in this initial stage so that designers have a frame of reference for their work . In small companies, these policies are usually set by the designers themselves before production begins;

* clothing design and pattern making : the selection of the pattern and design, the analysis of the model catalog and the making of the model garment;

* supply of raw materials : according to the decisions made up to this point, it must be determined which suppliers offer the fabrics and supplies necessary for the manufacture of the garments, what their prices are, their conditions, how long they take to make shipments, etc.

Production

When the initial stage has been completed and the bases of the work have been established, it is time to make the garments, for which a series of steps must be followed in sequence: sample molding; progression; chalked and overlaid; court; pre-sewing; sewing; assembly; merged; endings; labeled; packing.

Quality control in manufacturing

Finally, it is important to highlight that throughout the two stages just described, quality control must be carried out, which focuses on the fabrics and supplies, the process and equipment used, and the product. finished.

Although there are procedures common to all companies, the quality control methods are specific to each one and are consistent with their way of making garments .
