Carrasco

Holm oak

A small holm oak is called carrasco or carrasca.

Carrasco is a term with several uses. It may be a commonly used noun with different meanings or a proper name that identifies several places and people.

The first meaning of oak that the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) mentions in its dictionary refers to an oak : a small oak or a bush of this plant.

Holm oaks are trees from the Fagaceae family group. Also known as chaparro or chaparra , the carrasco is evergreen since it has foliage in all seasons of the year.

The acorn is the fruit of the oak tree. It can be used for human consumption after a process to remove the tannins or used to feed wild boars and pigs. Aleppo wood , on the other hand, stands out for its hardness and is used as firewood.

The Aleppo pine

A type of pine that grows in arid soils on the Mediterranean coast is called Aleppo pine , Aleppo pine , pincarrasco or pincarrasca . With a solid trunk, irregularly shaped crown and elongated leaves, its height can be around 25 meters.

It is common to reforest with Aleppo pine since this species helps combat erosion , being valuable for conserving the soil. The wood of the Aleppo pine, meanwhile, is used industrially to produce cellulose.

The cones of the Aleppo pine have a cinnamon hue. Inside it houses small sprockets.

Carrasco is a name shared by different places in the world. In Uruguay , Carrasco is the name of a neighborhood in Montevideo that is named in honor of a pioneer of the area: Salvador Sebastián Carrasco , ancestor of José Gervasio Artigas .

Carrasco International Airport is the most important airport terminal in Uruguayan territory. It is located in the department of Canelones , about 20 kilometers from Montevideo , and operates flights of more than a dozen airlines.

Also in Uruguay is Paso Carrasco , a city in Canelones . Through this department and Montevideo , on the other hand, the Carrasco stream flows.

Several public figures, in different nations, have the last name Carrasco . In the field of football , for example, we can find the Belgian Yannick Carrasco (who participated in the 2018 World Cup with his team) and the former Uruguayan player and current coach Juan Ramón Carrasco .

In Argentina , finally, Omar Carrasco was a conscript murdered in 1994 . Carrasco was 20 years old when he was assigned to the 161st Artillery Group in the Neuquén town of Zapala to fulfill his mandatory military service. There he died from the blows that two companions gave him on the orders of a second lieutenant. After this episode that went down in history as the Carrasco Case , mandatory military service was abolished in the country.
