The Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) recognizes more than a dozen meanings of the term candil , which comes from the Hispanic Arabic qandíl . This word, in turn, derives from the classical Arabic qindīl , originating from the Latin candēla .

The first meaning mentioned by the RAE in its dictionary refers to an element that is used to illuminate . The lamp consists of a container containing oil, a twist (a twisted rag or cotton wick) and a rod equipped with a hook so that the utensil can be hung.
