The Canary archipelago

The Canary Islands archipelago is made up of eight islands, as well as several islets and rocks. Tenerife , La Palma , Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are some of the islands that make up this group.

The autonomous community has two provinces: Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife . More than two million people live in this region, which has numerous tourist attractions, such as its beaches and several national parks.

a dialect

In the Canary Islands , a form of Spanish known as canario is spoken. It is a dialect influenced by Caribbean Spanish and the Portuguese language .

Between 1402 and 1496 the conquest of the archipelago by the Crown of Castile took place. Before colonization , the Canarian aborigines , also known as Guanches or ancient Canaries , lived in the area. The name refers to different populations of Berber origin.

In this historical process and in the following stages, the Canarian dialect was forged. Among its characteristics are the pronunciation of the letter H when it is at the beginning of a word ; the preference for the indefinite past tense; the seseo; and the lack of use of you .

Canelones Canary

The RAE points out that the adjective canary can also be used to refer to the native of Canelones ( Uruguay ). Canelones is the name of a department and a city that is the capital of said department.

The department of Canelones , located in southern Uruguay, is the second most populated in the nation . Only Montevideo surpasses it. As for the city of Canelones , it has about 20,000 inhabitants.

Former soccer players Diego Lugano and Hugo Romeo Guerra are some of the Canary Islanders who transcended internationally. In the case of Lugano , he played in two World Cups with the Uruguayan national team.

Bird

Canaries are birds recognized for their song.

Birds famous for their singing

The species with the scientific name Serinus canaria is colloquially known as the wild canary . These birds exhibit a yellow or greenish hue on the underside and face, while they are darker on top.

The wild canary feeds mainly on seeds and insects. It is mentioned as a gregarious animal that often nests in groups.

From the artificial selection of wild canary specimens in captivity, a species named Serinus canaria domestica emerged: the domestic canary . These canaries stand out for the bright color of their plumage .

It is interesting to note that all types of canaries are valued for their singing . Its chirping is very particular and distinctive.

Canary symbols

It should be noted that the wild canary is recognized by the Canary Islands authorities as a natural symbol along with a tree : the Canarian palm ( Phoenix canariensis ).

This palm tree, frequently used in gardening , can reach a height of more than ten meters. With its sap a drink called guarapo is prepared and palm honey is made.
