The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) presents more than twenty meanings of canal , a term whose etymological root is found in the Latin word canālis .

The idea of ​​a canal can be linked to the channel built by man to conduct or use water . The deepest sector that allows entry to a port and the roads in general through which a fluid can circulate is also called a channel.

A canal, therefore, can be an engineering work that makes navigation possible by opening a channel. So-called navigation canals can be built in an ocean, a river, a lagoon or other bodies of water .

An example of these canals is the Panama Canal , which links the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea . Thanks to a system of locks, boats can be raised to an artificial lake called Gatún . Another well-known artificial canal is the Suez Canal , which links the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt .
