Cane

Saccharum officinarum

The plant with the scientific name Saccharum officinarum is known as sugar cane.

Cane is a term with almost twenty meanings in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). The concept, which comes from the Latin canna , may refer to the stem that usually has knots and is hollow.

These stems belong to plants of the grass family. By extension, certain plants are known as reeds, such as Saccharum officinarum , Ferula communis and Arundo donax .

Saccharum officinarum is also called sugar cane . From this species, as its name indicates, the sugar that is used to sweeten gastronomic preparations is obtained. Sugar cane, on the other hand, allows the production of cane honey or molasses.

Cane as a drink

In the same way, we cannot ignore that in some countries the term cane is also used with another meaning. Specifically, when someone comes to a bar and orders a beer, they are requesting a beer of a certain size. Thus, the cane is a conical glass that is used to drink both beer and wine and is larger than a short and smaller than a fifth.

However, there is a wide variety of drinks that have the word in question in their name. For example:

  • Fruit cane , which is an alcoholic liquor whose preparation uses both molasses and fruits that are macerated.
  • White cane . It is an alcoholic drink that can sometimes be seasoned with caramel.
  • Brazilian cane o cachaça , que es un destilado de color blanco y con niveles altos de alcohol que se prepara utilizando caña de azúcar. Se considera que este producto es la base esencial para poder preparar el cóctel conocido como caipirinha .
  • Caña Clara , which is a spirit that is also made using the aforementioned sugar cane.
Fishing

The fishing rod is a device that allows you to catch fish.

Fishing device

A fishing rod or fishing pole , on the other hand, is a device used to catch fish. In its origins this rig was made with cane or natural wood, although currently synthetic materials are usually favored.

At one end of the rod, bait is placed with a lure or hook: when the fish tries to eat the bait, it becomes hooked. The angler must then collect the line (thread) by operating the reel to extract the fish from the water .

Other uses of the term cane

The long bones of the arms and legs; the stocking or footwear sector that covers from the foot to the knee; and marrow (the substance inside a bone) can also be called cane.

Furthermore, we cannot ignore that, colloquially, in Spain, cana is also used as an adjective. Specifically, when it is used to refer to a person who is great in various ways. So, for example, you can say: “Lionel Messi is the rock. “He makes plays that seem impossible.”
