Calligraphy

Art

Calligraphy is an art that consists of writing correctly and with an aesthetic sense.

Calligraphy is a term that has two meanings recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). Its etymological origin is found in the Greek kalligraphia , which is the result of the sum of three components:

  • The adjective kallós , which is synonymous with “beautiful” .
  • The word graphein , which can be translated as “write” .
  • The suffix -ia , which indicates “quality” .

Calligraphy as art

Calligraphy is the art that consists of writing creating letters formed correctly and with an aesthetic sense according to different styles. Calligraphy, therefore, goes beyond legibility : it does not only aim to make the letters understood, but also seeks to create beauty in the act of writing itself.

At school, great interest is placed in ensuring that students achieve good handwriting, especially so that it is legible. Hence, it is decided to take measures to achieve this objective such as using ruled sheets, copying the titles or phrases of stories, using two-line notebooks and following dictations.

Historical development

The origin of calligraphy is found in Chinese characters . In the culture of the Asian giant, the appearance of the ideograms is very important and even has symbolic connotations.

In the Western world, calligraphy arises from the Latin alphabet , already used by medieval religious on scrolls. With the passage of time, discipline lost its place, at least in everyday life.

The creation of the printing press caused calligraphy, a manual art, to be relegated. Later, the pen , typewriters and computers ended up confining calligraphy to a very limited space. Today calligraphy is used as a method of artistic expression that usually links drawing with writing.

Strokes

The characteristics that define an individual's writing form their calligraphy.

Calligraphy as writing characteristics

The RAE points out, on the other hand, that calligraphy is the set of characteristics that define an individual's way of writing. A handwriting expert, by comparing different documents , can discover the author of each one by studying the handwriting.

There are those who claim that people, when writing and showing their handwriting, leave traces of their personality in the letters they create. In this way, it could be stated that an individual is insecure or violent, for example, based on his or her traits.

Most significant strokes

Among the most significant calligraphic strokes are the following:

  • The ascending signature indicates that that personality has superiority traits.
  • If the letters are written in a proportionate way and with adequate space between lines, they belong to someone organized.
  • Responsible people write clearly, legibly, proportionally, with all punctuation marks and with a neat appearance.
  • Introverts are identified because their handwriting is small, grouped, the signature is illegible, angular or very simple while its opening is closed.
  • Those who are characterized by being extroverts make handwriting that is spaced, legible, fast, large and ascending.
  • Kind people are identified because they have legible, rounded, proportionate and grouped strokes.
