The caliber is the diameter that different hollow elements have inside. The most common use of the notion is with respect to the diameter of the barrel of a firearm or projectile .

The etymological history of the notion begins in kalópous , a Byzantine Greek term that can be translated as “last” . The concept later led to the pelvi kālbod , later to the classical Arabic qālib and finally to the French caliber before arriving in our language .

Examples of caliber

The caliber of a firearm , in this way, refers to the diameter of its barrel, also reflected in the diameter of the projectiles it fires. It is possible to express the caliber in millimeters or inches .

Take the case of 9 millimeter caliber pistols. As we already indicated above, the name refers to the diameter of the barrel of these pistols, which is 9 millimeters . When the inch is used as a measurement , the gauge is expressed with the decimal value of inches and the abbreviation cal . A .25 cal gun, therefore, has a barrel with a diameter of 0.25 inches .

Other uses of the term

On the other hand, a caliper (also called caliper ) is a tool used to measure depths, diameters and other types of lengths . These instruments have a main scale and an auxiliary scale to measure accurately.

Caliber can also refer to the importance or magnitude of something. For example: “I don't think a boxer of Muhammad Ali's caliber will be born again,” “We need to have political leaders of a different caliber.”

Caliber software

In the same way, we cannot forget that Caliber is a software that acts as an organizer and manager of electronic books. In addition, it gives the possibility of converting numerous file formats into books of this type.

It was officially released in 2006 and is programmed in Python . It has become a fundamental tool when cataloging and organizing the type of works mentioned since it allows the creation of databases where they can be organized according to criteria such as title, author, date, size, classification, series and the editor.

The concept in watchmaking and music

Caliber is also a term that is used within the watchmaking sector. An English watchmaker named Henry Sully was the one who, in 1715 , used it for the first time to refer to the model of each machine (that is, the size of the different parts of the movement and its arrangement).

Typically, each caliber has acronyms that refer to the name of the manufacturer in question. Among the most common are the one with bridges, the barrel, the oval, the one with serpentine bridges, the revolver, the elongated one and the chamfered rectangular one, among others.

Finally, it should be noted that there is a music group called Caliber 50 , whose hits are songs such as “I'll always love you,” “Eltender se fue” and “Será.”
