Punt

Tray

A punt can be a tray.

Batea is a term that comes from the Hispanic Arabic baṭíḥa , in turn derived from the classical Arabic baṭīḥah (which can be translated as “flat place” ). The concept can be used in different ways as recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) in its dictionary .

The first meaning mentioned by the RAE refers to a trough that is used mainly for washing . A trough, meanwhile, is a box that tends to become narrower towards the bottom and is intended for different uses.

Uses of the punt

Although the troughs are usually rectangular in shape, the trough is generally round. Lacking handles, it is usually made of wood .

It can be said that the batea is a type of vessel or container . In the past they were used to wash clothes .

Another use of the punt that was common is linked to artisanal mining . The pans, in this case, allowed the sand to be sifted to try to separate the gold that it could contain.

The batea was also important in the diet of several aboriginal peoples of the American continent. In it flours were mixed and the bread was kneaded.

a tray

The RAE indicates that batea can refer to a wooden tray used for serving. This meaning indicates that a punt is a fountain or a tray whose edge is not very high.

At this point it is interesting to refer to the notion of a punt as a display or shelf . Used in the plural ( bateas ), it is usually associated with the structure where a product is shown or offered to the public, generally a musical album . For example: “The Spanish singer's new album will hit the shelves in September” , “To the satisfaction of his admirers, the work of the Chilean singer-songwriter is already on the shelves” , “The album was sold out as soon as it reached the shelves” .

Mollusks

Mussels and other mollusks can be raised in rafts for commercial exploitation.

The punt as a boat

A boat whose bow resembles a trough is called a punt. These flat-bottomed vessels allow you to navigate in shallow, calm waters.

At first, the punts were used for fishing and loading . Currently these boats have recreational use , oriented towards walks and excursions.

These punts are propelled by an individual who remains standing and uses a long stick to exert the necessary force . What this person does is place the stick on the bed and push so that the pan moves.

The structure of the rafts is given by transverse planks that connect with panels located on the sides. These planks are arranged with a small separation so that the wood can swell when wet.

Support for mollusk farming

There is another type of punt that is found in the water . The notion can refer to a wooden structure that, placed in the sea, makes it possible to grow oysters, mussels and other species of mollusks .

Supports or nets are installed in the rafts, on which the animals are fixed. As algae tend to adhere and fish approach, the rafts end up becoming small ecosystems.
