Absenteeism is the failure of a person to go to the place where they must fulfill an obligation or perform a function. The term is accepted by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) in its dictionary as a synonym for absenteeism .
Before moving forward with the definition of absenteeism, it is important to know its etymological origin. It is a word that derives from Latin and is the result of the sum of two elements:
- Absentis , which can be translated as "he who is far away."
- The suffix -ism , used to indicate "activity" .
Work absenteeism
Absenteeism appears in different contexts. In the workplace, the idea refers to the failure of a worker to comply with his obligation to attend the place where he carries out his usual tasks. Absenteeism from work , in other words, implies that the worker does not go to work .
It can be said that absenteeism from work represents a violation of the obligations established in the employment contract. For a company , an employee not going to work creates an organizational inconvenience and can also cause additional expenses.
Absenteeism from work may be justified and foreseeable (when the worker notifies the company that, due to illness or other force majeure, he or she cannot go to work for a certain period of time) or it may be unjustified and unpredictable (if the worker is absent to work without prior notice). There is also talk of in-person absenteeism when the employee is present at his or her workplace, but does not comply with the assigned tasks.
Absence from class
In educational centers, there is truancy : the failure of a student to attend school . When absences are repeated frequently, absenteeism becomes a social and educational problem.
There are numerous causes that can cause so-called school absenteeism to occur. Among the most significant are the following:
- Disstructured families.
- Homes where everything from drugs to violence is present.
- If a child is a victim of bullying at school, it can also lead them to opt for absenteeism as a way to avoid the situation that is causing them so much harm.
- The fact that the minor is actively related to crime is also the cause of school absenteeism.
- Being part of a family group and an environment where training is never encouraged.
Consequences of school absenteeism
It is important to keep in mind that school absenteeism prevents a student from completing their academic training normally. That is why educational authorities try to combat this phenomenon .
As you can imagine, the fact that there are children who are truant from school has consequences. These young people will be harmed for different reasons:
- They will not receive good training that allows them to direct not only their present but also their professional future.
- They will be more likely to suffer social exclusion.
- They are at greater risk of coming into contact with crime and drug addiction.
- They will not be able to have an educational base that serves not only as a source of knowledge but of values, which are essential to coexist in society.
