Arthrology is the area of anatomy dedicated to the study of joints . The etymology of the term, in fact, takes us to the Greek word árthron , which can be translated as “articulation.”
The study of joints
To understand what arthrology is, therefore, it is first necessary to focus on two concepts: anatomy and articulation . Anatomy is the science focused on the shape and composition of a living being; A joint, on the other hand, is a mobile or fixed joint that connects one bone to another.
Returning to the idea of arthrology, it is a field of knowledge that, framed in anatomy, specializes in investigating joints. Their contributions are very relevant since they allow us to understand how a person moves and moves , for example.
Another term by which this concept is known is syndesmology , which is defined as the science of medicine that focuses on the study of ligaments and joints. Regarding its etymology, we find the following three components:
* the Greek term syndesmos : it is defined as "ligament" and is formed by the prefix syn- (together, with) and the word desmos ( chain , link);
* the term logos : its meaning is "treatise, expression, word";
* the suffix -ía : gives the idea of "quality."
The joints
Joints have hard parts and soft parts that facilitate the union of two or more bones or cartilage . The skeleton , then, develops thanks to the connections made possible by the joints. In addition to fixing the joints, the joints are key in all body movements.
The most important functions of joints are to enable organisms to: move in space; move bones relatively in their hierarchy within the skeleton; adopt a correct posture for the body. Not only do they provide us with fixation and movement, but they are also involved in breathing and in more sophisticated tasks, such as the use of musical instruments, computers, etc.
Joint set
The set of joints of a species is also known as arthrology. In this framework we can talk about the arthrology of the human being , the arthrology of the horse , the arthrology of the dog , etc.
Given that these and other species that have skeletons joined by joints are quite different, arthrology must rely on other disciplines to carry out studies that provide precise and reliable results. It is enough to observe them from a social point of view to notice that each of them has different needs and activities , so they use their joints for different purposes as well.
Importance of arthrology
Above we mentioned that joints not only allow us to join and move the bones of our skeleton, but are also linked to vital activities , such as breathing, and with others typical of modernity, such as all the complex tasks that require the use of the fingers in a very precise way, present in the workplace and study.
If this field of knowledge did not exist, in the face of any problem related to joints there would be no theoretical basis on which to rely to try to solve it. Furthermore, since much of our current life is far removed from what our ancestors had in nature, we need experts to teach us how to make good use of our body to avoid injuries and improve our posture .
What arthrology does, in short, is examine the physiological and anatomical composition of the joints. As part of his work, he investigates the handling of these pieces and the possible alterations they may suffer, thereby making important contributions to the care and recovery of health .
