Antenna

electromagnetic waves

An antenna is a device that makes it possible to capture or emit electromagnetic waves.

An antenna is a device that, installed on a machine, allows it to capture or emit electromagnetic radiation . The term comes from antenna , a word from the Latin language that in turn came from Greek.

In those origins, the word in question was used with two different meanings: to refer to the mast that held the sails of the ships and to refer, as Aristotle explained, to the appendages that insects had.

Operation of an antenna

An antenna can convert electromagnetic waves into electrical energy and thus act as a receiver . It can also develop the reverse process: convert electricity into electromagnetic waves and function as a transmitter .

According to their dimensions and other characteristics, antennas can receive or transmit signals with different wavelengths . The physical location of the antennas also affects their operation.

Television antennas , for example, can capture television signals transmitted on frequencies between 470 and 960 MHz in the band known as UHF and between 41 and 250 MHz in VHF. In this way, the television can receive over-the- air signals thanks to its antenna.

Mobile telephony ( cellular ) and radio stations also require antennas for signal transmission. In each case, the properties of the devices will be different.

Arthropod

In zoology, a type of appendage of certain arthropods is called antenna.

The concept in zoology

The idea of antenna also appears in the field of zoology . Certain arthropods have appendages divided into segments called antennas, which are located on the head and have sensory units that allow them to register temperature, capture odors and perceive flavors, among other things.

Male butterflies and beetles , to name one example, use their antennae to perceive the sexual pheromones secreted by the females. Thus, the antennas are key to the reproduction of the species.

Antenna Channel 3

In the field of media we find Antena 3 , one of the longest-running private television channels in Spain. It is operated by Atresmedia Televisión , it began broadcasting in January 1990 and has its central studios in the town of San Sebastián de los Reyes .

Antena 3 has achieved great relevance over the years thanks, among other things, to series such as "Farmacia de Guardia", "La casa de los líos", "Compañeros", "Un paso siempre", "Los hombres de Paco », «The Boarding School» and «Plastic Sea» .

an award

It should not be forgotten either that there are some important communication awards in Spain called Antena de Oro .

They have been delivered annually since 1962 by the Federation of Radio and Television Associations of Spain . Among the most relevant winners are from Pepa Bueno to Rosa María Mateo, including Mario Camus, Bobby Deglané, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente and Carles Francino .
