Student

A pupil is a student: someone who is developing a learning process.

Student is a concept that comes from alumnus , a Latin term. This word allows us to name the student or apprentice of a certain subject or a teacher . A learner, therefore, is a person who is dedicated to learning .

For example: “This school has more than two hundred students,” “I was a student of Jorge Escribel, a historian who now lives in Germany,” “Four students from the San Lisandro School were arrested for hitting an old man.”

Types of students

The notion of student can be used in reference to those who are studying a certain degree : “Mario is a Sociology student,” “The university basketball team is made up of three Engineering students and two Architecture students.” The concept is also used with respect to those who attend a certain educational center : “I was a student at the Azul Institute until I was thirteen, then I changed schools,” “I would like my daughter to be a student at this school.”

Depending on their link with the educational institution or with the subject under study, it is possible to grade the student in different ways. A regular, stable or official student is one who regularly attends an educational center and meets various requirements to access that status (academic level, class attendance, etc.). If the student does not attend classes but takes exams at the institution to obtain a degree , he or she is called a free student .

The specific obligations of each type of student are clearly different, although in both cases the requirement to pass a certain number of exams per period coincides to obtain approval and move on to the next course, or to complete their time at the institution and receive the title. corresponding.

Teacher

Teachers are in charge of instructing students.

Regular students vs. free

A regular student must attend school several times a week at a time defined from the beginning. Failure to comply with any of these two conditions carries a sanction, which may manifest itself in the accumulation of absences or tardiness records until the maximum allowed is reached and give rise to an expulsion or suspension, among other possible consequences.

This initial barrier alone marks a considerable and impossible to ignore difference between the regular student and the free student, because the latter does not have to respect schedules or carry out their studies on certain specific days, but is only required to be present on the dates of exams. As if this were not enough, in addition to attending class, the regular student must remain at the institute until all lessons end each day, so if they need to leave earlier they must present a document justifying it or they will also receive a sanction.

The students today

In traditional education, both compulsory and optional, it is not enough to want to study at a specific school or faculty to achieve it: according to the regulations of each institute, the applicant must go through a stage of academic and psychological evaluation to obtain a square , which he may maintain until he commits an offense such as those mentioned above or other more serious ones, such as acts of vandalism or violence.

But in recent years education has become increasingly flexible and accessible to everyone, largely thanks to the possibilities offered by the Internet. Nowadays, the line that divides the concepts of regular and free student is thinner than before, since it is possible to study remotely while having to comply with obligations such as schedules and permanence.

Followers and disciples

The idea of student can also be applied to the disciple or follower of an expert or an artist.

In this case, the learning/teaching process can be developed with more or less formality: “I am a visual artist and I have five students to whom I give private classes.”
