The hubbub is the bustle and shouting that occurs when many individuals speak simultaneously. The term also refers to the rushed way of speaking.
For example: “Why is there so much commotion in this place? What are all these people celebrating?” , “Let's go somewhere else: with this hubbub we cannot talk in peace” , “I couldn't sleep all night because of the hubbub generated by my neighbors” .
It is interesting to note that the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) mentions that, when the concept comes from the Hispanic Arabic al»arabíyya , it refers to the Arabic language . Furthermore, in colloquial language, oral or written language that is not understood is called hullabaloo.
Most common use of the term algarabía
The notion usually appears most frequently in the context of parties and informal gatherings . The music composed specifically to break the ice and dance in a carefree way is usually combined with meals that invite large gatherings between friends and family, and all this results in an atmosphere where hubbub reigns: there are many conversations, laughter and screams that overlap. They only seem to make sense within the group that produces them.
For this reason, it may happen that the excitement of some becomes the discomfort of others: if a person decides to have a meeting at home in the middle of the week that lasts until late at night, with the characteristics set out in the paragraph above, it is likely to annoy a neighbor who must get up very early to go to work or study. Although there are rules for this within each neighborhood community, many times the solution comes too late.
In many regions , hubbub is usually associated with joy or good humor : “The singer was received with hubbub by his followers at the airport,” “The hubbub continues in the city after last night's triumph,” “With a triple in “The last second, Kobe Bryant unleashed the uproar.”
Different plants
Algarabía, on the other hand, is the common name given to several plants . Generally the notion refers to the Mantisalca salmantica , which belongs to the group of Asteraceae.
This plant has several peculiarities related to its name . First of all, the two terms that make up its scientific name consist of the same syllables, although in a different order: Man-ti-sal-ca sal-man-ti-ca . On the other hand, the list of common names it receives depending on the region is practically endless; In addition to algarabía, it is also known as escobera, Cabezuelas, broom of Cabezuela, escobones, shepherd's bread, thistle of balls and estebe de Salamanca , among many more.
Regarding the habitat of this cacophony, we can say that it covers the entire Mediterranean except for Corsica and Crete . It is a ruderal plant, which occurs in habitats that have been modified by humans, such as abandoned land that used to be used for cultivation, urban areas or roadsides. More specifically, the Mantisalca salmantica prefers dry, arid rocky places.
Until recently, this plant was used as raw material to make brooms , and from there some of its common names arose. Given its medicinal properties, some people use it to treat diabetes naturally, as it helps lower blood glucose levels.
It should be noted that Parentucellia viscosa and Agrostis nebulosa are other plants that are known as algarabía.
