Airbag

Shock airbag

In the event of a collision, the airbag can save lives

Airbag is a concept that refers to an air bag that, if a crash occurs, inflates automatically to protect those traveling in a vehicle, cushioning the impact .

Instant protection

Most cars manufactured today have airbags. The system includes sensors to detect collisions; devices that generate a chemical reaction to produce nitrogen or another gas in a fraction of a second; and the bag itself that is inflated with the gas.

In this way, if a car crashes, the airbag sensors are activated and the airbag inflates almost instantly. The occupants, instead of hitting the steering wheel, dashboard or other hard parts of the car , hit the already inflated bag.

There are front airbags , side airbags , rear airbags and curtain airbags . It is important to mention that the presence of this safety mechanism in the car does not imply that the use of the seat belt is no longer necessary: both resources are complementary and, acting together, they manage to reduce the lethality of road accidents.

Brief history

The renowned German company Mercedes-Benz patented airbag technology in 1971 , more precisely on October 23. However, it had been in the research and development stage for more than five years, testing this crash protection system to guarantee the greatest possible safety for future buyers.

Once patented, it took around ten years until a vehicle of the brand finally incorporated it. It was the S-Class W126 , from 1981. Later, it was also part of the features of the E-Class W123 .

Airbag composition

In an airbag system we can distinguish three main parts:

* impact detectors – These are usually located under the car as this is where deceleration begins in the event of a crash. However, nowadays there are usually detectors in various parts of the car to minimize the chances of error;

* inflation devices : through a chemical reaction mentioned above, they are capable of producing a large volume of gas in a fraction of a second, as if it were an explosion;

* bags : the material they are made of is usually nylon, and they are inflated with the gas from the reaction just detailed.

rock bands

Airbag , on the other hand, is a name shared by different rock bands. In Argentina , it is a group founded in 1999 (then under another name) by the brothers Guido , Patricio and Gastón Sardelli that has released six albums. Airbag is also a Spanish punk rock trio that began its career in 1998 .
