Armored is a concept that comes from the verb acorazar , whose first meaning mentioned in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) refers to giving a coating to a boat or a construction .
A battleship is called, by extension, a large ship that has armor and is used for war missions. Battleships, due to their armament and characteristics, were the most important ships in a war fleet, surpassing destroyers and cruisers .
Use of a battleship
From the end of the 19th century until the development of World War II , battleships were key in military confrontations as they allowed supremacy to be established in maritime battles. However, the increasing range of missiles and aerial development caused these ships to lose prominence.
It is important to mention, however, that battleships were often affected by vessels of smaller size and cost. For this reason, throughout history , they received various criticisms.
famous ships
One of the most famous battleships was HMS Dreadnought , which belonged to the United Kingdom . It began its functions in 1906 and represented a technological revolution due to its characteristics . Thirteen years later it was decommissioned and finally, in 1923 , scrapped.
Another transcendent battleship was the Potemkin , of the Russian fleet, launched in 1904 . In 1905 , the crew rebelled against the officers within the framework of the revolution . This event came to cinema through Sergei Eisenstein , director of a silent film titled “Battleship Potemkin” .
Movie "Battleship Potemkin"
In 1925 was the premiere of this feature film that has become not only a cinema classic but also one of the best films of all time. It is because of its ability to tell the story and the tragedy that is intrinsic to it without the need for dialogue and also because of the montage of which it was the result.
Some curiosities that exist regarding this production are the following:
- Undoubtedly, this film was used as propaganda for the communist regime, insofar as it establishes the need for ordinary citizens to try to end the chains that kill them, oppress them, suffocate them...
- One of the most covered, represented and honored scenes in all of history is what is known as “The Odessa Staircase.” It reflects the moment in which soldiers savagely charge against citizens, including a mother and her baby. Thus we have been able to see the proposal that directors of the stature of Woody Allen and Francis Ford Coppola made in their own feature films such as “Bananas” and “The Godfather” respectively.
- For years it was banned in several countries due to its revolutionary nature. This would be the case, for example, of Germany , Spain and Great Britain .
- The well-known British pop group Pet Shop Boys composed an audio track for the film in 2004 , to make it more current.
