Padded

Dam padding

Padding is a coating that protects the integrity of the dam.

The act and result of quilting is called quilting . This verb ( quilchar ) has two uses: it can consist of covering or wrapping something to protect it from the cold or impacts; or in placing tow, wool, cotton or other similar material between two fabrics.

Dam lining

A padding can be a coating that is used to reinforce the lines of certain dams. In this case, the padding has a layer of cane or straw that is braided with ropes. Its main function is to prevent erosion, wear and damage caused by water, waves, tidal action or other environmental factors.

The coating can consist of different materials, depending on the specific conditions and project requirements. Some of the most commonly used for dam lining are the following:

  • rocks or stones – This revetment, which is also known as riprap, involves placing carefully selected stones or blocks of rock on the surface of the dam. These rocks provide a strong, durable layer that protects the sea wall from erosion caused by waves, wind and currents;
  • Concrete : Concrete coating consists of applying a layer of this material to the surface of the dam. It can be poured on site or prefabricated and then placed on the dam. This type of coating provides a strong, durable surface that minimizes the effects of erosion and water damage to the levee structure;
  • Geotextiles : This is the name given to the permeable and flexible materials used as lining in dikes. They are designed to filter water and prevent soil erosion, while allowing fluids to pass through. Geotextiles are often used in combination with other liner materials, such as rockfill, to provide additional protection;
  • Synthetic materials : In some cases, materials such as geomembranes or geosynthetics are used, which are designed to be waterproof and resistant to the elements, providing an effective barrier against water infiltration and protecting the dike structure.

It is important to highlight that the lining of dikes is an extra protection measure to guarantee the stability and durability of these constructions. The selection of the type of coating will depend on several factors, such as the marine environment, hydrological conditions, design requirements and available resources . Levee lining projects must be carried out following appropriate standards and regulations, as well as best engineering practices to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the structure.

Quilt

In some South American countries , quilting is called quilting. Quilts or duvets are covers (a warm covering used in bed) that are usually filled with cotton or down.

Therefore, a padding has a cover and a filling . It can be used as a bedspread and/or blanket , being useful especially in times of low temperatures .

The origins of quilting are found in the rural areas of the European continent. Peasants used duck feathers to make blankets with which they kept warm in winter when lying down or sleeping.

In times of low temperatures, the duvet is essential to take care of our health while we sleep.

Many times quilting replaces sheets and quilts as covers. In those cases, its use simplifies the process of making the bed . However, the duvet can also be included along with other blankets.

It is possible to find quilts with different designs, styles and prints. Children's quilts , for example, usually have drawings of animals , superheroes, spaceships or toys. The measurements of the padding, on the other hand, vary since the beds have different dimensions.
