Dropping out of school is the withdrawal of a student from an educational institution before the end of the stage they were studying. In other words: when a student stops attending school even though he has not yet completed his education, he is dropping out of school.
It should be noted that abandonment is the act and result of abandoning : leaving something, moving away from it. School , on the other hand, is that linked to the school (the educational center where instruction is provided).
School dropout, a social problem
Dropping out of school is a social problem . Those people who do not complete the mandatory training established by the State do not have the necessary knowledge to successfully enter the labor market. In this way, they can only hope to obtain informal or precarious jobs, without the possibility of progress. It can be said that these individuals are at a disadvantage compared to those who did complete their school studies.
For children, access to education is a right . That is why dropping out of school turns the child into a victim . On the other hand, due to compulsory schooling, parents who allow a minor to leave school are responsible for this circumstance.
Generally, school dropout is related to other social problems. There are parents who, due to lack of money , cannot send their child to school since they cannot cover the costs of transportation, food, study materials, etc. In turn, the need to generate income leads adults to make children work. This is how school dropouts occur. To avoid this, the State must guarantee that the family has access to the material resources necessary for their subsistence and so that the minor can complete their studies.
The case of Spain
In Spain , for some time now, intense work has been done to reduce school dropout rates. And the country is in the highest positions regarding this factor in all of Europe.
The studies carried out in this regard have left such interesting data on school dropouts as the following:
- There is a higher percentage of males than females who opt to leave the classroom.
- The countries with the highest figures for this parameter in the old continent, in addition to Spain , are Romania and Malta . In contrast, where these data are lowest are Poland , Slovenia and Croatia, among others.
- At the educational level where there is the lowest dropout rate, it is at the university level.
How to combat school dropouts
